How to Fix ChatGPT History Not Loading & Blank Sidebar

Updated 10/8/2026

When the left sidebar in ChatGPT fails to display your past conversations—either showing a spinning loading wheel, a blank space, or an explicit "Unable to load history" error message—it disrupted your workflow. This issue is typically caused by temporary OpenAI server outages, API rate limiting, or corrupted local browser storage.

Because ChatGPT relies on a persistent database connection to sync your chats across devices, any interruption in this handshake will hide your historical data. Follow this step-by-step guide to determine if the issue is on OpenAI's end and how to resolve it if it is a local client error.

1. Check the Official OpenAI Status Before modifying any browser settings, verify if OpenAI is experiencing a systemic backend issue. The chat history module relies on a specific microservice (`backend-api/conversations`) that can go offline independently of the main chat interface.

  1. Visit the [official OpenAI Status page](https://status.openai.com).
  2. Look for any active incident reports labeled "Degraded performance on chat history", "Database instability", or "High error rates".
  3. Scroll down and expand the ChatGPT section to check if the "History" subsystem is operational.
  4. If there is an active incident, you must wait for OpenAI's engineering team to deploy a fix. Local troubleshooting will not resolve a database-side outage.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh to Clear Session Cache Your browser occasionally caches broken API responses or expired session states, preventing the sidebar from requesting your chat list anew. A standard refresh (F5) only reloads cached elements. You need to force a hard reload.

  • Google Chrome / Microsoft Edge (Windows): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  • Google Chrome / Microsoft Edge (Mac): Press Cmd + Shift + R.
  • Apple Safari: Hold Shift and click the Reload button in the address bar, or press Option + Cmd + E to empty cache, then refresh.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.

3. Clear ChatGPT Site Data and Cookies If a hard refresh fails, corrupted cookies or local storage objects may be blocking the session authorization required to pull your chat history database.

  1. Open ChatGPT in your desktop browser.
  2. Click the padlock icon (or tune icon) on the far left of the URL address bar.
  3. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  4. Click Manage on-device site data or Clear data.
  5. Remove all stored cookies and local data for chatgpt.com and openai.com.
  6. Restart your browser, navigate back to ChatGPT, and log in again to rebuild your session tokens.

4. Temporarily Disable Browser Extensions Browser extensions that modify web pages—especially ad blockers, script blockers, translation tools, or third-party ChatGPT enhancement tools (such as history exporters and prompt managers)—frequently break the JavaScript scripts responsible for rendering the sidebar.

  1. Open your browser's extension manager (e.g., chrome://extensions/ in Chrome).
  2. Disable all active extensions, paying close attention to ad blockers (uBlock Origin, AdBlock) and AI-related add-ons.
  3. Reload the ChatGPT interface.
  4. If your history loads, re-enable your extensions one by one to isolate the conflicting software.

5. Test on an Alternative Network or Device ISPs and regional Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) sometimes block or delay requests to OpenAI's data-syncing endpoints. Testing your connection isolates network-level blocks.

  1. Turn off your Wi-Fi and connect your computer to a mobile hotspot, or try loading the ChatGPT mobile app on cellular data.
  2. If you are using a VPN or proxy server, disable it temporarily, as OpenAI aggressively blocks IP addresses associated with high-traffic VPN nodes.
  3. If your history loads fine on a cellular connection, the issue is with your local network's DNS or routing rules. Try changing your router or system DNS settings to Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).

When to Escalate If you have completed all of these steps, verified that status.openai.com shows green lights across all systems, and still cannot access your sidebar on any device or network, your account may be experiencing an individual database sync error.

To escalate the issue, log in to the web interface, click the Help button (the question mark icon in the bottom right corner, or access the Help Center at help.openai.com), and start a chat with the support bot. Clearly state that you have cleared your browser cache, tested multiple networks, verified no active outages exist, and that your account's /conversations endpoint is failing to return data.
