ChatGPT Internal Server Error: Fix 500 & Connection Bugs

Updated 10/9/2026

An "Internal Server Error" (often accompanied by an HTTP 500 error code or a generic "An error occurred" message) is one of the most frustrating issues you can encounter when using ChatGPT. It indicates that OpenAI's servers encountered an unexpected condition that prevented them from fulfilling your request.

While this error typically originates on OpenAI's side due to server load, database bottlenecks, or active deployments, local configuration issues can sometimes mimic or prolong these errors on your device. Follow this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to identify where the failure lies and how to resolve it.

1. Verify the System Status

Before troubleshooting your own device, confirm whether OpenAI is experiencing a widespread outage.

  1. Visit the official OpenAI Status page at status.openai.com.
  2. Check the "ChatGPT" component to see if it is operational.
  3. Look at the past 24 hours of incident history. If there is an active yellow (degraded performance) or red (major outage) bar, the problem is on OpenAI's side.
  4. If there is an active outage, you must wait for OpenAI's engineering team to deploy a fix. No local changes to your browser or network will bypass a server-side outage.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh

Your browser might be attempting to load outdated or corrupt cached assets, causing the application interface to crash and display an internal server error.

  • On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  • On Mac (Safari): Press Option + Command + E to empty the cache, then Command + R to reload.
  • On Mac (Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R.

This bypasses your local browser cache and forces your computer to fetch the absolute latest version of the ChatGPT application files directly from the server.

3. Clear ChatGPT Site Data and Cookies

If a hard refresh doesn't work, corrupted browser cookies or local storage states may be sending invalid authorization headers to OpenAI's API gateways, triggering a 500 internal server error.

  1. In Chrome or Edge, click the lock icon next to the URL in the address bar.
  2. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  3. Click Manage on-device site data and delete all listed storage for chatgpt.com and openai.com.
  4. Restart your browser, navigate back to ChatGPT, and log back in.

4. Disable Conflicting Browser Extensions

Certain extensions—especially ad blockers, script blockers (like NoScript), cookie managers, or VPN extensions—can interfere with ChatGPT's WebSocket connections and API calls.

  1. Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window. This loads the browser without most extensions running.
  2. Log in to ChatGPT.
  3. If the internal server error disappears, one of your browser extensions is causing the conflict.
  4. To identify the culprit, return to your normal browser window, disable your extensions one by one, and refresh ChatGPT after each disablement.

5. Toggle VPN and Proxy Services

OpenAI uses strict Content Delivery Network (CDN) rules and DDoS protection services (like Cloudflare) to protect its infrastructure. If you are using a VPN or proxy, the server may flag your IP address as suspicious or route your request through a congested server node, leading to a timed-out server error.

  1. Turn off your VPN software or proxy settings.
  2. Try reloading the ChatGPT interface.
  3. If you must use a VPN, try changing your server location to a different city or country to force a fresh routing path to OpenAI's servers.

6. Use an Alternative Client or Device

Sometimes the issue is localized to a specific browser or app state.

  • Try a different browser: If you are using Chrome, attempt to log in using Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
  • Try the mobile app: Switch to the official ChatGPT app on iOS or Android. If the app works while your computer doesn't, the issue is strictly browser- or desktop-network-related.
  • Switch networks: Disconnect from your current Wi-Fi network and connect your device to a mobile hotspot. If ChatGPT loads, your primary network’s router configuration or ISP routing paths are causing the connection to fail at the gateway level.

When to Escalate

If you have completed all of the steps above and continue to receive an internal server error—while the status page claims all systems are operational—the issue is likely tied specifically to your OpenAI account database record.

  1. Go to the OpenAI Help Center at help.openai.com.
  2. Click the chat bubble icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  3. Select "Messages" and choose "Ask a question".
  4. Report that you are experiencing an "Internal Server Error" that persists across multiple networks, devices, and clean browsers. Provide them with screenshots and the exact time of the error.
