How to Fix ChatGPT Lazy Responses & Cut-Off Code

Updated 10/6/2026

If you are using ChatGPT for coding, writing, or analysis, you may have noticed a frustrating behavior: "lazy" responses. This happens when the AI provides brief summaries, uses placeholders like // TODO: implement your logic here, or truncates its output instead of writing the complete, functional response.

This behavior is usually a result of optimization techniques, model-level context limitations, or prompt ambiguity. Here is how to fix ChatGPT lazy responses and force the model to output comprehensive, fully-realized answers.

1. Explicitly Ban Placeholders in Your Prompt

ChatGPT often tries to save tokens by omitting repetitive or boilerplate text. To stop this, you must explicitly state that you want full, production-ready output without any shortcuts.

  • What to avoid: "Write a Python script to scrape a website."
  • What to use instead: "Write a complete, working Python script to scrape a website. Do not use placeholders, comments like 'add your code here', or truncated logic. Write every line of code required to make the script run immediately."

Adding negative constraints (telling the model what *not* to do) is highly effective at bypassing model-level laziness.

2. Chunk Your Request Into Smaller Sub-Tasks

If your prompt asks for a complex architecture, a 2,000-word article, or a script with multiple features, the model is likely to summarize. It does this to stay within its generation limit (output token limit) and to preserve its processing speed.

To fix this, break the task down:

  1. Ask for the outline or the structural logic first.
  2. Prompt the model to write the first section or component in full detail.
  3. Once completed, prompt: "Now write the second component in the same level of detail, making sure it integrates with the first."
  4. Repeat this sequential prompting until the task is finished.

3. Configure Custom Instructions

If you constantly face lazy outputs, you can set a global rule in your ChatGPT settings so you do not have to write "no placeholders" in every single prompt.

  1. Click your profile icon in ChatGPT and select Customize ChatGPT (or Custom Instructions).
  2. In the second box ("How would you like ChatGPT to respond?"), paste the following rules:
  3. "Never use placeholders, ellipses, or 'insert code here' blocks."
  4. "Provide complete, functional code blocks and full text drafts."
  5. "If an output is long, do not summarize; write until you run out of tokens, then wait for me to say 'continue'."
  6. Save the changes and start a new chat.

4. Trigger the "Continue Generating" Command Correctly

When ChatGPT cuts off mid-response or stops before completing a file, it has likely hit its maximum token output limit per turn.

If this happens, do not ask it to "rewrite the whole thing." That will cause it to generate a lazy summary of what it already wrote. Instead:

  • Click the Continue generating button if it is visible.
  • If the button is not there, type: Continue writing exactly where you left off, starting with the last line of code/text.

5. Switch Models or Adjust Parameters

Sometimes, specific model updates (like specific versions of GPT-4o) exhibit higher levels of laziness due to safety or performance tuning.

  • In the Web UI: If you are using GPT-4o, try switching to GPT-4 (if available) or GPT-4o-mini to see if the behavior changes. Older or smaller models sometimes follow rigid instructions more literally than newer models designed for speed.
  • In the Playground / API: If you are using the OpenAI API, lower the frequency_penalty and presence_penalty parameters, or slightly adjust the temperature (between 0.5 and 0.7) to encourage more thorough, structured generations without repetitive loops.

When to Escalate

If ChatGPT continues to return highly truncated, lazy, or nonsensical responses despite these prompt adjustments, the issue might be a system-wide bug or an active deployment issue.

Check the official OpenAI Status Page (status.openai.com) to verify if "Model Degradation" or performance issues are currently reported. If the system is fully operational but the issue persists across all new chats, use the Help button in the bottom right corner of the ChatGPT interface to report a model quality regression directly to the development team.
