Fix ChatGPT Blank Screen & Not Loading Issues
Updated 9/24/2026
If you open ChatGPT and are greeted by a blank white or black screen, or if the interface loads but the site is stuck generating responses with a spinning wheel, you are experiencing a client-side rendering failure or a localized connection block. These issues usually happen when cached browser files clash with a recent OpenAI code update, or when active browser extensions block the scripts required to render the chat interface.
Because we are an independent support site, we have compiled the most reliable, practical steps to bypass these client-side loading blocks and restore your access to ChatGPT.
1. Check if the issue is a widespread outage Before altering any settings on your device, confirm whether the problem is on your end or OpenAI's servers. A platform-wide outage can prevent the frontend scripts from loading entirely.
- Visit the official status page at status.openai.com.
- Look for any active incidents under "API", "ChatGPT", or "Labs".
- Check third-party outage monitors like DownDetector to see if other users are reporting similar loading failures.
If the status page shows a major outage, local troubleshooting will not work. You must wait for OpenAI's engineering team to deploy a fix.
2. Perform a hard refresh of your browser A standard page refresh (pressing F5 or the reload icon) simply reuses cached files. A hard refresh forces your browser to bypass its local cache and download the latest version of the ChatGPT website directly from the server.
- On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or hold Ctrl and click the Reload button.
- On Mac (Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R.
- On Mac (Safari): Hold Shift and click the Reload button in the address bar.
3. Clear ChatGPT-specific site data and cookies If a hard refresh fails, corrupt cookies or session storage are likely blocking the application from rendering. You do not need to clear your entire browsing history; you can target only the data related to OpenAI.
In Google Chrome: 1. Navigate to **chat.com** or **chatgpt.com**. 2. Click the lock/tune icon to the left of the URL in the address bar. 3. Click **Site settings**. 4. Under the "Usage" section, click **Clear data**. 5. Restart your browser and attempt to log in again.
In Mozilla Firefox: 1. Click the lock icon next to the URL. 2. Click **Clear cookies and site data**. 3. Select **Remove** in the pop-up confirmation. 4. Reload the page.
In Apple Safari: 1. Open Safari and click **Safari** in the top menu bar, then select **Settings**. 2. Go to the **Privacy** tab and click **Manage Website Data**. 3. Search for `openai` or `chatgpt` in the search bar. 4. Select the matching entries and click **Remove**, then click **Done**.
4. Disable conflicting browser extensions Security tools, script blockers, and aggressive adblockers frequently identify ChatGPT's WebSocket connections or dynamic script loads as potential threats, blocking them from executing.
- Open your browser's extension management console (e.g., chrome://extensions/ in Chrome).
- Temporarily toggle off all adblockers, privacy shields (like Privacy Badger), and script blockers.
- Turn off any VPN browser extensions.
- Reload ChatGPT. If it loads correctly, turn your extensions back on one by one to isolate the one causing the conflict.
5. Use private browsing or a different browser An easy way to verify if your primary browser environment is causing the blank screen is to isolate it completely using an incognito/private window or a secondary browser.
- Open an Incognito Window (Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows, or Cmd + Shift + N on Mac).
- Go to chatgpt.com and attempt to log in.
- If the page loads normally, your main browser profile has a corrupted cache, an active extension block, or a cookie conflict that must be cleared.
- Alternatively, download and try a completely different browser engine (e.g., switching from Chrome to Firefox or vice versa) to rule out system-wide browser engine issues.
When to escalate If you have completed all the steps above and ChatGPT still loads as a blank screen across multiple browsers and devices (such as your phone on cellular data), the issue may be a localized ISP routing block or a backend account-specific flag.
If you are a ChatGPT Plus subscriber and cannot access your account, check your email for any account suspension notices. To contact support during a blank-screen scenario, visit help.openai.com and look for the chat widget in the bottom-right corner of the page to file a support ticket directly with OpenAI.
