ChatGPT Not Responding to Prompts: How to Fix

Updated 10/3/2026

You type a prompt into ChatGPT, hit Enter, and nothing happens. Or perhaps the send icon click registers, but the screen remains entirely blank, or the generation bubble spins endlessly without producing text. This frustrating issue—where ChatGPT simply stops responding to inputs—usually stems from localized browser conflicts, network disruptions, or unannounced backend outages at OpenAI.

Before assuming your account is locked or your device is broken, walk through these diagnostic and repair steps. This guide will help you isolate the cause and restore ChatGPT's responsiveness.

1. Verify OpenAI System Status Often, a non-responsive prompt input indicates a partial outage. OpenAI's servers might be online, but the specific database or model cluster handling your request could be degraded.

  1. Go to the official [OpenAI Status Page](https://status.openai.com/).
  2. Look at the operational status for ChatGPT. If there are red or yellow bars, OpenAI is currently experiencing degraded performance or an outage.
  3. Scroll down to check the Past Incidents log. Often, a brief "increased error rates" window is noted here before the main status bars update.
  4. Check a community platform like Downdetector or search social media using the tag #ChatGPTDown. If thousands of users report issues simultaneously, the problem is on OpenAI's end, and you must wait for their engineering team to deploy a fix.

2. Perform a Clean Hard Refresh Your browser caches elements of the ChatGPT web application to speed up load times. If OpenAI updated their backend code while your browser session was active, cached assets can conflict, preventing the prompt from executing properly.

A standard reload (clicking the circular arrow or pressing F5) only refreshes the page content, but a "hard" refresh forces the browser to pull entirely fresh data from OpenAI's servers.

  • Windows (Chrome/Edge/Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5, or hold Ctrl and click the reload icon.
  • Mac (Chrome/Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R.
  • Mac (Safari): Press Option + Cmd + E to empty the cache, then hold Shift and click the reload icon.

After performing a hard refresh, type a short, simple prompt (like "test") and press Enter to see if the interface responds.

3. Isolate Browser Extensions in Private Browsing Browser extensions—particularly ad-blockers, script-blockers, translation tools, and privacy guards—frequently interfere with ChatGPT’s WebSocket connections. WebSockets are the network protocols ChatGPT uses to stream text answers back to your screen in real time.

  1. Open a new Incognito or Private Browsing window:
  2. Chrome/Edge: Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + N (Mac).
  3. Firefox: Press Ctrl + Shift + P (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + P (Mac).
  4. Navigate to chatgpt.com and log back into your account.
  5. Type a simple prompt and press Enter.

If ChatGPT responds immediately in Incognito mode, one of your browser extensions is blocking the script execution. You will need to disable your extensions one by one in your main browser window to identify the culprit. Pay special attention to any extensions that block tracking, manage cookies, or translate web content automatically.

4. Check for VPN and Network Blocks OpenAI employs strict security filters to protect its web app and APIs from scraping and DDoS attacks. If your IP address belongs to a range flagged by their automated security firewalls (such as Cloudflare), your prompts might be silently dropped or blocked.

  1. If you are using a VPN, disconnect from it entirely or switch to a different country node and refresh the page.
  2. If you are on a restricted corporate, school, or public Wi-Fi network, the network administrator may have blocked outbound WebSockets or specific OpenAI domains.
  3. Try switching to a mobile hotspot or cellular data. If ChatGPT starts responding immediately on mobile data, your primary network router, firewall, or ISP is blocking the connection.

5. Clear Local Storage for ChatGPT If a hard refresh fails to clear corrupted local application data, you must manually delete the cookies and site data specifically for the ChatGPT domain.

  1. Click the padlock or settings icon to the left of the URL bar in your browser while on chatgpt.com.
  2. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  3. Click Manage cookies and site data (or click the trash can icons next to the listed domains).
  4. Confirm the deletion. Note that this will log you out of your account.
  5. Restart your browser, navigate back to ChatGPT, log in, and test your prompt again.

When to Escalate If you have completed all of these steps, confirmed that the OpenAI status page reports all systems are operational, and verified that the platform fails on multiple devices (phone, tablet, computer) across different networks, the issue may be account-specific.

To escalate this issue: 1. Go to the [OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/). 2. Click the chat bubble icon in the bottom-right corner. 3. Select Ask a question and report that your account cannot send prompts.

Before reaching out, open your browser's Developer Tools (F12), go to the Console tab, attempt to send a prompt, and take a screenshot of any red error logs that appear. This technical information will help OpenAI's support team diagnose the root cause much faster.
