ChatGPT payment failed how to fix

Updated 10/7/2026

When trying to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus or pay an outstanding invoice for ChatGPT Team, encountering a 'payment failed' or 'card declined' message is a common issue. OpenAI handles all subscription transactions through Stripe, a highly secure third-party payment gateway. Stripe applies strict fraud prevention filters, which can trigger transaction failures even if your account has sufficient funds.

If your payment keeps failing, follow these step-by-step troubleshooting solutions to resolve the checkout block.

1. Verify Zip Code and Billing Address Details The most frequent cause of payment failures on Stripe is a mismatch in the Address Verification System (AVS). Stripe checks the billing address you enter against the address registered with your card issuer.

  1. Open your online banking app or look at a recent paper statement to find the exact billing address associated with your card.
  2. Return to the ChatGPT checkout screen.
  3. Enter the postal code and billing address exactly as they appear on your bank statement. Pay close attention to unit numbers, spelling, and spacing.
  4. If you are using an international card, ensure the country selected in the billing country dropdown matches the card's issuing country.

2. Complete 3D Secure (SCA) Authentication For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and several other regions, regulations require Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). This requires you to verify your identity through your bank's app or via a one-time SMS passcode.

  1. Keep your mobile phone nearby when attempting the upgrade.
  2. Watch for an authentication popup or a redirect window from your bank after clicking 'Subscribe.'
  3. If the verification window is blocked by a browser popup blocker, disable all extensions and retry the payment.
  4. Approve the transaction in your banking app immediately. If the authorization expires (usually after 60 to 120 seconds), the transaction will fail.

3. Bypass Stripe Session Errors Using Incognito Mode Stripe saves checkout session data in your browser's local cache. If a previous payment attempt failed, the browser might store that corrupt session state, repeatedly serving you the same error message without actually trying to charge your card again.

  1. Open a new Incognito or Private browsing window.
  2. Navigate to chatgpt.com, log in, and click 'Upgrade Plan' in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Re-enter your card details manually instead of relying on autofill.
  4. Alternatively, switch to a completely different web browser (such as switching from Chrome to Safari or Firefox) or use a mobile device connected to cellular data.

4. Check for Restrictive Card Types OpenAI's payment processor does not accept all forms of payment. If you are using a non-standard payment card, it is highly likely to be rejected.

  1. Check your card type. Prepaid cards, virtual credit cards, and certain gift cards are frequently flagged and blocked by Stripe to prevent subscription fraud.
  2. Use a standard credit or debit card issued by a major network (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, or JCB).
  3. Ensure your card is authorized for recurring international online transactions, as OpenAI is based in the United States. If you are outside the US, your bank may block the charge by default until you call them to authorize transactions to OpenAI.

5. Turn Off VPNs and Proxy Servers Stripe evaluates the risk level of every transaction based on the IP address of the buyer. If your IP address does not match the geographic location of your billing card, or if you are using a VPN, the system may flag the transaction as high-risk and auto-decline it.

  1. Disable any active VPN, proxy, or iCloud Private Relay service.
  2. Verify that your IP address matches your billing country by searching 'what is my IP' online.
  3. Reload the ChatGPT billing page and try submitting the payment again.

When to Escalate If you have verified your card details, disabled your VPN, confirmed with your bank that the funds are available, and still receive a payment failure, you must contact OpenAI's billing department directly.

  1. Go to help.openai.com.
  2. Click the chat icon in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Select 'Billing' and choose 'I am having trouble upgrading my account.'

Since this is a payment issue, do not share your full credit card number in the chat window. OpenAI support only needs your account email address and the last four digits of the card to locate the blocked transaction in their Stripe dashboard.
