ChatGPT Refund Request: How to Get Your Money Back
Updated 10/16/2026
Accidental charges, double billing, or sudden service outages right after upgrading to ChatGPT Plus can leave you wanting your money back. OpenAI’s official terms of service state that all subscription fees are generally non-refundable. However, there are several exceptions to this rule, including regional consumer protection laws (like those in the UK and EU) and clear billing errors such as duplicate charges.
If you need to request a refund for ChatGPT Plus, follow this practical, step-by-step guide to navigate OpenAI’s support system and secure your refund.
1. Confirm Your Refund Eligibility Before submitting a request, determine if your situation falls under OpenAI's approved criteria for refunds. OpenAI strictly enforces its refund policy, but they will typically issue a refund in the following scenarios:
- EU, UK, or EEA Residents: Under regional consumer protection laws, residents of these countries are legally entitled to cancel their subscription and receive a full refund within 14 days of the initial purchase. This is known as the "right of withdrawal."
- Duplicate Charges: If a technical glitch caused Stripe to bill you twice in the same billing cycle, OpenAI will refund the extra charge.
- Immediate Cancellation After Accidental Upgrade: If you accidentally upgraded and did not use any GPT-4 or Plus features (meaning you did not send any prompts after upgrading), OpenAI may issue a discretionary refund.
- Service Failure: If you paid for the service but could not access it due to extended, documented system-wide outages on OpenAI's status page, you have a strong case for a refund.
2. Submit a Request via the OpenAI Help Center OpenAI does not provide phone support or a public email address for billing inquiries. All refund requests must go through their automated chat system:
- Navigate to help.openai.com in your web browser.
- Click on the chat bubble icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
- Select Messages and then click on Ask a question or Send us a message.
- Choose Billing from the categorized options.
- Select Request a refund or type "Refund Request" directly into the input field.
- Provide your ChatGPT account email address when prompted by the bot.
- If you are an EU or UK resident, type: *"I am exercising my right of withdrawal as an EU/UK resident within the 14-day cooling-off window."*
- Locate your transaction ID on your email receipt (usually starting with ch_ or pi_) and paste it into the chat to help support agents locate your payment instantly.
3. Cancel the Auto-Renewal to Prevent Future Charges While waiting for OpenAI to process your refund request, cancel your active subscription immediately. This prevents Stripe from billing you again in the next cycle:
- Log into your account at chatgpt.com.
- Click on your profile name or picture in the bottom-left corner of the sidebar.
- Select My Plan from the pop-up menu.
- Click on Manage my subscription. This redirect opens OpenAI's secure Stripe billing customer portal.
- Click the Cancel Plan button.
- Confirm the cancellation. Your plan status will update to show that the subscription will end at the close of your billing cycle. If OpenAI approves your refund, they will manually terminate your Plus access immediately.
4. Dispute the Charge with Your Bank (As a Last Resort) If OpenAI does not respond to your inquiry or denies a legitimate refund (like a duplicate charge), you can dispute the charge with your financial institution:
- Log in to your credit card or bank's online portal.
- Locate the duplicate or erroneous charge from OpenAI.
- Click on the transaction and select Dispute Charge or Report a Problem.
- Select "Duplicate transaction" or "Service not rendered" as the reason.
- Upload a screenshot of your attempts to contact OpenAI support via the help widget.
*Note: Filing a chargeback will likely result in OpenAI permanently banning your ChatGPT account. Use this option only if you have exhausted all other support avenues and cannot get a response from support.*
When to Escalate Escalate the situation to your bank or credit card company if OpenAI fails to respond to your support ticket within 10 business days, or if they refuse a legally mandated refund under EU/UK consumer protection laws. Ensure you save a copy of your receipt, a screenshot of your chat conversation with the Help Center bot, and the date you submitted the initial request to use as evidence for your payment provider.
