How to Fix ChatGPT Repeating Itself or Looping

Updated 10/19/2026

It can be highly frustrating when ChatGPT gets stuck in a loop, repeating the same phrases, sentences, or even entire blocks of text. This behavior—often referred to as a "repetition loop" or "generation trap"—occurs when the model's token-prediction algorithms get locked into a pattern where the most statistically probable next word is one it has already used.

Because LLMs generate text based on the history of the current conversation, once repetition enters the chat history, the model is highly likely to keep repeating it. Here is how to break the loop and get ChatGPT back on track.

1. Start a Fresh Conversation The quickest and most effective way to stop ChatGPT from repeating itself is to click **New Chat** in the sidebar. * **Why it works:** ChatGPT relies heavily on the active conversation's history (the "context window") to draft its next response. If the previous turn contains repetitive text, the model will continue to mimic that pattern. * **What to do:** Copy any important information you need from the current chat, start a completely new session, and paste your prompt there.

2. Edit Your Last Prompt If you do not want to abandon your current conversation, you can force the model to branch off into a new response path by editing your previous prompt. 1. Hover over the last prompt you sent. 2. Click the **Edit** icon (it looks like a pencil). 3. Make a minor adjustment to your phrasing, or add an instruction like "Do not repeat your previous phrasing." 4. Click **Save & Submit**. * **Why it works:** This action deletes the repeated output from the active thread history and forces ChatGPT to generate a brand-new response from that specific branch of the conversation.

3. Temporarily Disable Custom Instructions or GPTs Conflicting instructions or overly rigid system prompts can trap ChatGPT in logical loops. 1. Click on your profile icon in the bottom-left or top-right corner. 2. Select **Customize ChatGPT** (or **Custom Instructions**). 3. Toggle off both "Enable for new chats" options, or temporarily delete instructions that force specific formatting. 4. Save your changes and try starting a new chat. * **Note:** If you are using a custom GPT from the GPT Store, the creator's system prompt might be causing the repetition loop. Try switching back to the standard GPT-4o or GPT-4o-mini models to see if the behavior persists.

4. Force a Formatting Change If the model is stuck on a specific sentence structure, you can disrupt its generation pattern by explicitly demanding a different output format. * Ask ChatGPT to reformulate its last answer using a completely different structure. For example, prompt it with: *"Rewrite your previous answer, but output it only as a numbered list of bullet points with no introductory text."* * Alternatively, try: *"Explain the concept again, but use a completely different set of vocabulary and do not reuse any phrases from your last response."*

5. Clear Browser Cache and Hard Refresh Sometimes the model is behaving correctly, but a local browser script or browser extension is causing the user interface to render the same text stream repeatedly. * **Hard Refresh:** Press `Ctrl + F5` on Windows or `Cmd + Shift + R` on Mac to reload the page while bypassing the cache. * **Clear Cache:** If a hard refresh doesn't work, go to your browser's settings, clear your cached images and files, and log back into your OpenAI account. * **Disable Extensions:** Browser extensions, particularly those that modify web page scripts, translation tools, or ad-blockers, can interfere with ChatGPT's real-time text-streaming protocol (Server-Sent Events). Try opening ChatGPT in an Incognito or Private window to test this.

When to Escalate If ChatGPT continues to repeat itself across entirely new chat sessions, different devices (e.g., both on the desktop web app and the mobile app), and after disabling custom instructions, it indicates a system-wide model degradation issue or an active service outage at OpenAI.

Check the official [OpenAI Status Page](https://status.openai.com) to see if there are active incidents related to model performance, API latencies, or elevated error rates. If the status page shows all systems operational but the model remains broken for several hours, you can report the bug directly through the Help Center bubble in the bottom right corner of the ChatGPT interface.
