ChatGPT Stuck Generating Response? How to Fix the Freeze

Updated 10/5/2026

If ChatGPT gets stuck while generating a response—showing a constant spinning icon, an endless blinking orange dot, or pausing mid-sentence without an error message—it usually indicates a broken connection between your browser and OpenAI's servers.

This issue can prevent you from starting new conversations or retrieving past chats. Before assuming the platform is completely broken, you can systematically diagnose and fix the issue using the troubleshooting steps below.

1. Verify OpenAI System Status

Before troubleshooting your local setup, check if OpenAI is experiencing a partial or full outage. High traffic loads can cause database locks or slow downs that leave generation requests hanging in queue.

  1. Visit the official OpenAI Status page at status.openai.com.
  2. Check the "ChatGPT" section for any active incidents, degraded performance, or elevated error rates.
  3. Visit third-party monitoring tools like Downdetector to see if other users are reporting similar issues in real-time.

If the status page indicates an active incident, the issue is on OpenAI's end. You will have to wait for their engineering team to resolve the server-side bottleneck.

2. Hard Refresh and Clear Site Data

Your browser may be holding onto corrupted session cookies or cached scripts that prevent the WebSocket connection (which ChatGPT uses to stream text) from staying active. A standard page refresh often isn't enough to clear these elements.

  1. If you are on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge, perform a hard refresh by pressing Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac).
  2. If the loading loop persists, clear the site-specific storage. Click the padlock icon in the left corner of your browser's address bar.
  3. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  4. Click Clear data or delete all cookies listed under chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com.
  5. Reload the page and log back into your account.

3. Disable Conflicting Browser Extensions

Third-party extensions—specifically ad blockers, script managers (like Tampermonkey), VPN extensions, and translation tools—frequently interfere with ChatGPT’s API requests.

  1. Open your browser's extension management page (chrome://extensions in Chrome, or about:addons in Firefox).
  2. Temporarily toggle off all active extensions.
  3. Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window. This loads a clean environment without most background scripts.
  4. Navigate to ChatGPT and try generating a response.

If the prompt processes successfully, re-enable your extensions one by one to isolate the specific tool causing the conflict.

4. Isolate Network and VPN Bottlenecks

ChatGPT uses persistent WebSockets and Server-Sent Events (SSE) to deliver responses character by character. If your network temporarily drops packets or blocks long-lived connections, the stream will freeze.

  1. Disable your VPN: Virtual Private Networks often route traffic through congested servers that OpenAI's Cloudflare security layer may flag or throttle, causing the connection to hang.
  2. Switch Networks: If you are connected to a corporate or school Wi-Fi network, firewall rules may block the persistent connections needed for AI streaming. Try switching to a mobile hotspot or a personal network to test.
  3. Flush DNS Cache: A corrupted DNS cache can cause intermittent routing issues. Open your command prompt (cmd on Windows) or Terminal (Mac) and type ipconfig /flushdns (Windows) or sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder (Mac), then press Enter.

5. Force a New Chat Session

Sometimes, a specific conversation thread becomes too long or contains complex formatting that overwhelms the model's context window, causing it to freeze during generation.

  1. Click the New Chat button in the top-left corner of the sidebar to initiate a clean session.
  2. Paste your prompt into the new chat.
  3. If you must use the original thread, try deleting your last prompt or editing a previous prompt higher up in the history to force the model to branch off from a cleaner state.

6. Switch Platform Access

If the web interface remains stuck, testing the service on a different platform can help identify if the block is device-specific.

  1. Open the official ChatGPT mobile app on iOS or Android.
  2. Ensure your device is on cellular data rather than the Wi-Fi network you used on your computer.
  3. Send a test prompt. If the app responds normally, the issue lies within your computer's browser profile, local network, or specific device configuration.

When to Escalate

If you have completed all the steps above and ChatGPT remains permanently stuck generating on all devices and networks, the issue is likely account-specific or a backend edge case.

To report the issue: 1. Log into your account and click the help icon (question mark) in the bottom right corner of the screen. 2. Select Help & FAQ to launch the support messenger. 3. Open a ticket detailing the exact behavior: state that you have already cleared cache, disabled extensions, and tested across different networks to expedite the tier-1 troubleshooting process.
