ChatGPT Stuck on Loading Screen? How to Fix It Fast

Updated 10/10/2026

When you open ChatGPT and find yourself staring at an infinite loading spinner, a blank white screen, or a user interface that refuses to register clicks, the cause is usually a breakdown in communication between your web browser and OpenAI's backend servers. This can stem from a localized browser caching error, a CDN routing issue, or a wider server-side service outage.

Follow this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to isolate the cause and bypass the loading block.

1. Verify OpenAI Server Status Before modifying any local settings, verify if the loading issue is on OpenAI's end. A backend system failure will prevent the web interface from fetching essential assets, leaving your screen stuck in a loading loop.

  • Check the Official Status Page: Navigate to status.openai.com to see if there is an active incident affecting ChatGPT or its underlying authentication APIs.
  • Look for "Degraded Performance" or "Outage": If you see red or orange indicators on the timeline, the service is currently struggling to process requests.
  • Check Third-Party Trackers: Sites like Downdetector can show real-time user-reported spikes that might not yet be acknowledged on the official status dashboard.

If there is an active system-wide outage, you must wait for OpenAI's engineering team to deploy a fix. Local troubleshooting will not bypass a server-side crash.

2. Force a Hard Refresh Web browsers aggressively cache ChatGPT’s single-page application structure. If an update was deployed while your session was active, or if a script failed to download due to a temporary packet loss, your browser might be trying to load outdated or corrupt local assets.

  • Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  • Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R (or hold Shift and click the reload icon in Safari's address bar).

This forces your browser to bypass its local cache and fetch the absolute latest version of the site directly from OpenAI's servers.

3. Clear Storage and Cookies Specific to OpenAI If a simple refresh fails, corrupted cookies or local storage states may be blocking the authentication handshake. Rather than clearing your entire browser history, you can target just the OpenAI domain.

  1. In Chrome, Edge, or Brave, open ChatGPT (chatgpt.com).
  2. Click the padlock or tune icon on the far left side of the address bar.
  3. Click Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  4. Select Manage on-device site data or click the trash can icon next to the listed domains (chatgpt.com and auth0.openai.com).
  5. Restart your browser and navigate back to ChatGPT. You will need to log in again.

4. Disable Conflicting Browser Extensions Certain web extensions—primarily ad blockers, privacy shields, script blockers, and auto-translation tools—can block the specific API calls ChatGPT uses to construct its interface.

  1. Open your browser's extension manager (e.g., type chrome://extensions/ in the URL bar).
  2. Temporarily toggle off all active extensions. Pay close attention to extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or custom script managers like Tampermonkey.
  3. Reload the ChatGPT tab.
  4. If the page loads successfully, re-enable your extensions one by one to identify which one is blocking the interface. Once found, add chatgpt.com to that specific extension's whitelist or exclusion list.

5. Disable VPNs and Proxies OpenAI utilizes Cloudflare to protect its network from botnets and DDoS attacks. Cloudflare frequently flags IP addresses associated with commercial VPN services, proxies, or Tor nodes. If your connection is flagged, the Cloudflare security challenge may fail to load in the background, leaving you stuck on a permanent loading screen.

  • Temporarily disconnect from your VPN client.
  • Turn off any active proxy configurations in your operating system's network settings.
  • Reload ChatGPT. If it loads, try switching your VPN server to a different country or server protocol (such as WireGuard) before reconnecting.

6. Switch to the Mobile App or an Incognito Window To pinpoint whether the issue is isolated to your primary browser configuration, test alternative entry points.

  • Incognito/Private Browsing: Open an Incognito window and log in. If this works, the issue is definitely related to cookies, cache, or extensions in your main user profile.
  • Official Mobile App: Try accessing ChatGPT on iOS or Android using cellular data (disconnect from your local Wi-Fi). If the app loads while the desktop site on Wi-Fi does not, the issue lies within your local network or router's DNS settings.

When to Escalate If OpenAI’s status page shows all systems operational, and you have completed the steps above on multiple devices (including cellular data) with no success, your account may be experiencing a localized database routing issue.

To report this, visit the OpenAI Help Center at help.openai.com. Click the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of the screen, select "Messages," and initiate a support ticket explaining that the user interface is failing to render across multiple networks and devices.
