ChatGPT subscription not upgrading: How to fix

Updated 10/14/2026

Upgrading to ChatGPT Plus is usually instantaneous, but sometimes your account remains stuck on the free tier even after your credit card or payment method has been successfully charged. This synchronization error typically happens due to cached browser sessions, multiple account confusion, or processing delays between OpenAI's payment gateway (Stripe) and their user database.

If you have paid the $20 subscription fee but still see the "Upgrade to Plus" prompt or lack access to GPT-4 features, follow these step-by-step troubleshooting solutions to resolve the issue.

1. Verify Your Payment Status

First, confirm that the transaction actually went through on your financial institution's end before troubleshooting the software.

  1. Open your online banking app or credit card portal.
  2. Look for a pending or completed charge of $20 (plus any applicable local taxes) from "OpenAI" or "Stripe".
  3. If you see a "pending" charge that immediately disappeared, your bank may have flagged the transaction as fraudulent, or Stripe may have rejected the payment after an initial pre-authorization.
  4. If no charge exists at all, the upgrade process failed before payment completion. You will need to attempt the upgrade again, preferably using a different card or payment method.

2. Force Log Out and Log Back In

ChatGPT relies on session tokens stored in your browser to verify your subscription tier. If you stay logged in during the upgrade transaction, your active session may not dynamically update to reflect your new "Plus" status.

  1. Navigate to the ChatGPT interface in your browser.
  2. Click on your profile icon or name in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Click Log out.
  4. Close all open browser tabs running ChatGPT.
  5. Open a fresh browser window, navigate back to chatgpt.com, and log in.

This forces OpenAI's authentication servers to issue a fresh session token containing your updated subscription privileges.

3. Clear Browser Cache and Local Storage

Corrupted local site data can prevent your browser from fetching your updated account status from OpenAI's servers.

For Google Chrome: 1. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select **Settings**. 2. Navigate to **Privacy and security** > **Third-party cookies** > **See all site data and permissions**. 3. Type **openai** into the search bar at the top right. 4. Click the trash bin icon next to "openai.com" to clear cookies and local storage.

For Apple Safari: 1. Click **Safari** in the top menu bar, then select **Settings**. 2. Click the **Privacy** tab, then select **Manage Website Data**. 3. Search for **openai**, select it, and click **Remove All**.

After clearing this data, restart your browser and log back into ChatGPT to see if the Plus features are unlocked.

4. Check for Account Mismatch

A common cause of this issue is accidentally upgrading one account while logged into another. OpenAI allows sign-ups via email/password, Google, Microsoft, and Apple accounts. It is very easy to create duplicate accounts accidentally.

  1. Check the confirmation email you received from OpenAI or Stripe.
  2. Verify the exact email address where the digital receipt was sent.
  3. Ensure you are logging into ChatGPT using that exact email address and the specific authentication method associated with it. For example, if you signed up using "Continue with Google," logging in via the manual email and password field (even with the same Gmail address) can sometimes generate a separate, parallel free account instead of accessing your existing Plus account.
  4. Log out of your current session and try logging in with each of your potential SSO (Single Sign-On) methods to find the upgraded account.

5. Use the Restore Purchase Option (Mobile Upgrades)

If you initiated your subscription through the official ChatGPT app on iOS or Android, your payment is processed by Apple or Google rather than Stripe. These transactions sometimes fail to link with your OpenAI account.

  1. Open the ChatGPT app on your mobile device.
  2. Access the menu (tap the two lines or your profile icon).
  3. Go to Settings > Subscription.
  4. Tap Restore Purchases at the bottom of the screen.

This prompts the app to query the App Store or Google Play Store databases, locate your active subscription receipt, and apply it directly to your logged-in OpenAI account.

When to Escalate

If you have verified the charge on your bank statement, cleared your browser data, logged out and back in, and confirmed you are using the correct login credentials but still do not have access, you must contact OpenAI Billing Support.

Go to [help.openai.com](https://help.openai.com) and click the chat bubble icon in the bottom right corner to initiate a billing support ticket. Select Billing and provide your invoice ID (found on your email receipt) and your account email. Do not attempt to subscribe a second time, as this can lead to double charges. Response times for billing support typically range from 24 to 72 hours.
