ChatGPT Won't Load: Quick Fixes & Outage Checks

Updated 10/11/2026

When ChatGPT fails to load, you are typically greeted by a completely blank white screen, an infinite loading spinner, or a server error message such as "502 Bad Gateway" or "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable." These symptoms usually point to one of two sources: an active OpenAI system outage or a localized browser/network misconfiguration.

Use this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to isolate the cause and restore your access to ChatGPT.

1. Check the official OpenAI status page Before editing your network settings, verify if the problem lies on OpenAI’s side.

  1. Navigate to status.openai.com.
  2. Look at the status bar for "ChatGPT". If it shows "Major Outage" or "Partial Outage," the platform's backend servers are down or overloaded.
  3. Check the incident history at the bottom of the page to see if engineers are already deploying a patch.
  4. Cross-reference with independent tracking tools like Downdetector to see if other users in your geographic region are reporting similar login or loading failures.

If an outage is active, troubleshooting your local system will not help. You must wait for OpenAI to resolve the server-side issues.

2. Force-refresh your browser Browsers cache web assets (like JavaScript and CSS stylesheets) to speed up loading times. If ChatGPT updated its site assets while you had an active session, a cache conflict can cause a blank screen or loop.

  • Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 (or Ctrl + Shift + R).
  • Mac (Safari): Press Option + Cmd + E to empty the cache, then Cmd + R to reload.
  • Mac (Chrome/Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R.

This forces your browser to bypass its local cache and pull the latest code directly from OpenAI's servers.

3. Clear ChatGPT cookies and site data If a hard refresh fails, corrupt cookie files or expired local storage data might be blocking the session. You do not need to clear your entire browser history; you can target ChatGPT's data specifically.

On Google Chrome: 1. Click the **tune/lock icon** to the left of `chatgpt.com` in your address bar. 2. Select **Site settings**. 3. Click **Clear data** under the Usage header. 4. Restart your browser and attempt to load the page again.

On Mozilla Firefox: 1. Click the **lock icon** in the address bar. 2. Select **Clear cookies and site data**. 3. Click **Remove**. 4. Reload the page.

4. Disable conflicting extensions and VPNs Ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) frequently conflict with Cloudflare, which OpenAI uses for security and DDoS mitigation. If Cloudflare's interactive challenge ("Verify you are human") fails to load, ChatGPT will hang indefinitely.

  1. Incognito mode test: Open an Incognito or Private browsing window. Try to load ChatGPT. If it loads successfully, an extension is causing the block.
  2. Disable security extensions: Temporarily turn off extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or NoScript for the domain.
  3. Disconnect your VPN: Some OpenAI endpoints flag shared VPN IP addresses as suspicious, triggering blockpages or 403/502 errors. Turn off your VPN or switch to a different server location.

5. Flush your DNS and switch to public DNS servers If your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) DNS cache is outdated or experiencing routing failures, your computer won't find the correct path to OpenAI's servers.

To flush your DNS on Windows: 1. Open the Start menu, type `cmd`, and run the **Command Prompt** as Administrator. 2. Type `ipconfig /flushdns` and press **Enter**.

To flush your DNS on macOS: 1. Open **Terminal** (via Spotlight or Applications > Utilities). 2. Type `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder` and press **Enter**. Enter your admin password if prompted.

If flushing doesn't work, consider changing your DNS settings to a reliable public resolver: * Cloudflare DNS: Primary 1.1.1.1, Secondary 1.0.0.1 * Google Public DNS: Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4

6. Switch your network connection Local router configurations, firewall rules, or DNS hijacking on public Wi-Fi networks can block ChatGPT.

  1. Disconnect your device from your local Wi-Fi.
  2. Enable cellular data on your mobile device (hotspot) and connect your computer to it.
  3. Try loading ChatGPT. If it loads on mobile data, the issue is isolated to your local Wi-Fi router or ISP configuration. Restarting your router may clear the internal routing tables.

When to escalate If the official status page lists all systems as "Operational," and you have completed all local troubleshooting steps (including trying a different device entirely), the issue may be account-specific.

Contact OpenAI support by visiting help.openai.com and using the chat widget in the bottom right corner of the screen. Since you cannot log in, select the option to report a login or loading issue as a guest. Provide them with your browser version, operating system, and any specific console errors (found by pressing F12 and looking at the "Console" tab).
