How to Check If ChatGPT Is Down: Status & Troubleshooting

Updated 10/6/2026

When ChatGPT fails to load, displays a blank screen, or throws connection errors, the first task is determining where the breakdown is occurring. It could be a global OpenAI server crash, a regional CDN routing failure, or a localized issue with your web browser or network connection.

Follow these diagnostic steps to verify if ChatGPT is down and resolve any client-side issues preventing you from connecting.

1. Check the Official OpenAI Status Page The most reliable source of truth for platform-wide outages is the official OpenAI Status dashboard.

  1. Navigate to status.openai.com in your web browser.
  2. Review the top status bar. A green bar indicating 'All Systems Operational' means OpenAI's servers are running normally.
  3. Look closely at the component breakdown. The status is divided into distinct services: 'ChatGPT', 'API', 'Developer Labs', and 'Playground'. An outage can affect ChatGPT while leaving the developer API fully functional.
  4. Scroll down to see the 'Past Incidents' history. Often, a major spike in errors or a partial outage will be listed here with live updates from OpenAI engineering teams working on a fix.

2. Cross-Reference with Third-Party Monitoring Tools Official status pages can experience a reporting delay of 10 to 30 minutes during sudden, catastrophic traffic spikes. To check for real-time, user-reported outages:

  1. Visit Downdetector and search for 'OpenAI' or 'ChatGPT'. Look at the outage map and report graph. A sharp, near-vertical spike in reports within the last hour strongly indicates a current outage.
  2. Check social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Search for the query #ChatGPTDown and toggle to the 'Latest' tab. If thousands of users are posting about the same loading issue within the last few minutes, the system is down globally.

3. Perform a Hard Refresh and Clear Site Data If the status monitors report that ChatGPT is fully operational, but you still see a spinning wheel, blank white screen, or a 500-series server error, cached site assets in your browser may be corrupt.

  1. Force a hard reload:
  2. On Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  3. On Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R.
  4. Clear cookies and site data for ChatGPT:
  5. In Google Chrome, click the padlock or tuning icon next to the URL in the address bar.
  6. Select 'Site settings' or 'Cookies and site data'.
  7. Click 'Manage on-device site data' or 'Clear data'.
  8. Reload the page and attempt to log in again.

4. Test on an Alternative Network and Device Isolating the issue to your specific machine or local network helps rule out widespread routing problems.

  1. Disconnect your mobile device from your local Wi-Fi network and switch to cellular data.
  2. Open the official ChatGPT mobile app (iOS or Android) or navigate to chatgpt.com on your mobile browser.
  3. If ChatGPT loads perfectly over cellular data but fails on your computer, the problem lies with your local Wi-Fi router, local DNS configuration, or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Restart your router or try changing your device’s DNS settings to a public resolver like Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).

5. Disable VPNs and Proxies OpenAI uses highly sensitive web application firewalls (WAFs), primarily managed by Cloudflare, to block malicious automated traffic and DDoS attacks.

  1. If you are running a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or a proxy server, temporarily disable it.
  2. Many public VPN IP ranges are flagged as suspicious by security firewalls, which can cause ChatGPT to hang indefinitely during the security check phase or throw an immediate Access Denied error.
  3. If disabling your VPN resolves the issue, try switching to a different server location within your VPN application or contact your VPN provider for a clean IP address.

When to Escalate If OpenAI’s status page shows no current incidents, other users are not reporting outages, and you have exhausted all local network, browser, and device troubleshooting steps, your specific user account or IP block might be experiencing a rare, isolated failure.

Go to help.openai.com and click the chat bubble icon in the bottom right corner to interact with the support assistant. Provide specific details, including the exact error codes (e.g., 502 Bad Gateway, 403 Forbidden), your account email address, your general geographic location, and a description of the steps you have already taken.
