OpenAI API Key Not Working in Code: Fix

Updated 10/16/2026

When integrating OpenAI into your application, encountering an error that your API key is invalid or not found is a common roadblock. This usually presents as an AuthenticationError, a 401 Unauthorized status, or an error stating No API key provided.

Follow these steps to diagnose and resolve why your OpenAI API key is not working in your codebase.

1. Verify API Key Status and Project Scope Before changing your code, ensure the API key itself is active and possesses the correct permissions.

  1. Log in to the [OpenAI Developer Platform](https://platform.openai.com/).
  2. Navigate to Dashboard > API Keys.
  3. Check the status of your key. If it has been deleted or revoked, you must generate a new one.
  4. If your organization uses Projects, ensure your API key is assigned to the correct project and has "User" or "Owner" permissions. If a key is restricted to a project that lacks access to specific models (like GPT-4), your API calls will fail.

2. Check for Whitespace and Formatting Errors API keys are sensitive strings. Small formatting errors when copying and pasting can break authentication.

  1. Open your code or environment configuration file.
  2. Ensure there are no leading or trailing spaces, quotes, or line breaks inside your API key string.
  3. Verify you copied the entire key. OpenAI keys typically begin with sk-proj- (for newer project-based keys) or sk- (for legacy keys). If it is truncated, generate a new one.

3. Resolve Environment Variable Loading Issues Storing your API key in an environment variable is the recommended security practice, but code environments often fail to load them correctly.

For Python Developers If you are using Python, ensure you have installed `python-dotenv` to load your `.env` file:

`bash pip install python-dotenv `

Add this to the very top of your script to force-load the variables:

`python import os from dotenv import load_dotenv from openai import OpenAI

Explicitly load the .env file load_dotenv()

Print check (Do not deploy this print statement to production) print("Loaded Key:", os.environ.get("OPENAI_API_KEY")[:10] + "...")

client = OpenAI() # Will automatically pull OPENAI_API_KEY from environment `

For Node.js Developers Ensure you import and configure `dotenv` before initializing the OpenAI client:

`javascript import 'dotenv/config'; import OpenAI from 'openai';

const openai = new OpenAI({ apiKey: process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY, }); `

If process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY returns undefined, check that your .env file is in the root directory of your project, not inside a subfolder like /src.

4. Adapt to the OpenAI SDK v1.0+ Syntax If you updated your SDK recently, legacy code initialization patterns will fail, mimicking an invalid key error.

Python Legacy vs. Modern SDK * **Legacy (Do not use):** `openai.api_key = "your-key"` * **Modern (Use this):** You must instantiate a client: ```python from openai import OpenAI client = OpenAI(api_key="your-actual-key") ```

Node.js Legacy vs. Modern SDK * **Legacy (Do not use):** `const configuration = new Configuration({ apiKey: 'key' });` * **Modern (Use this):** ```javascript const openai = new OpenAI({ apiKey: 'your-actual-key' }); ```

5. Test with a Direct cURL Request To isolate whether the issue lies within your code library or your account, test the key directly via your command line interface. Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` with your actual key:

`bash curl https://api.openai.com/v1/models \ -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" `

  • If this returns a JSON list of models: Your API key is active and working. The issue lies entirely within your code configuration, library paths, or environment variable loading.
  • If this returns a 401/Unauthorized error: Your key is invalid, deleted, or your account has outstanding billing issues.

When to escalate If the cURL test fails with a billing or suspension error, navigate to the **Settings** > **Billing** section of your OpenAI dashboard. Ensure you have a positive credit balance (OpenAI API uses a prepaid model; it does not charge your card post-use like utility bills). If you have a positive balance and active keys but still receive persistent `401 Unauthorized` responses on direct cURL requests, contact OpenAI Developer Support via the Help icon in the bottom right of the developer platform.
