Why is ChatGPT so Slow? How to Fix Chat Latency

Updated 9/24/2026

When ChatGPT takes an unusually long time to respond, hangs mid-sentence, or lags while typing, the issue is typically caused by high server load, excessive local browser overhead, or degraded network connection stability. Because ChatGPT streams responses token-by-token using WebSockets, even minor interruptions can stall the output.

This guide explains how to isolate the cause of slow ChatGPT responses and restore optimal performance.

1. Check for OpenAI Server Degradation

Before changing local settings, verify if the bottleneck is on OpenAI's infrastructure. High traffic or model deployments can cause system-wide latency.

  1. Visit the official status page at status.openai.com.
  2. Look at the status bar for ChatGPT.
  3. Check the past 24 hours of incident history for mentions of "degraded performance," "elevated latency," or "increased response times."
  4. If an outage or degradation is active, you must wait for OpenAI to deploy a fix. Switch to a lighter model like GPT-4o mini in the meantime, as smaller models require less compute and queue faster.

2. Start a New Chat Session to Clear Context

As a single chat thread grows longer, ChatGPT must process the entire conversation history (the "context window") before generating each new word. In massive threads, this causes severe latency and typing lag.

  1. Look at your left-hand sidebar in the ChatGPT interface.
  2. Click New Chat (the pencil/plus icon) to start a blank session.
  3. Send a test prompt in this new window.
  4. If the new chat responds instantly, your previous thread has exceeded the threshold for efficient rendering. Avoid using a single thread for weeks of continuous work; instead, start fresh threads for new topics.

3. Disable Conflicting Browser Extensions

Certain web browser extensions interfere with the real-time stream of data from OpenAI's servers, particularly those that modify webpage elements or inspect network traffic.

  1. Open your browser's extensions/add-ons manager.
  2. Temporarily toggle off ad blockers, translation extensions, grammar checkers (such as Grammarly), and third-party AI assistant toolbars.
  3. Reload the ChatGPT tab and test performance.
  4. Alternatively, open an Incognito / Private Window where extensions are disabled by default. If ChatGPT runs fast in Incognito, re-enable your extensions one by one to find the culprit.
  5. If you use a VPN or custom DNS proxy, turn it off temporarily. VPN routing paths can introduce latency to OpenAI's Edge CDN endpoints.

4. Toggle Hardware Acceleration and Clear Cache

If the text renders in jerky blocks or your browser tab consumes 100% of your CPU, your browser is struggling to render the incoming Markdown styling.

  1. Open your browser settings (e.g., Chrome Settings > System).
  2. Locate Use graphics acceleration when available (Hardware Acceleration) and ensure it is turned On. If it was already on and you experience lag, try turning it off, restarting the browser, and testing again.
  3. Clear cached site data specifically for OpenAI. In Chrome, click the padlock icon to the left of the URL, select Site Settings, and click Clear data.
  4. Log back into your account and test.

5. Switch to a Faster Model (GPT-4o mini)

Advanced models like GPT-4o or specialized reasoning models (like the o1 series) perform deep processing steps that naturally take longer to respond. If speed is your priority, downgrade the active model for routine tasks.

  1. In your active chat window, check the model selector at the top-left or bottom of the screen.
  2. Change the model from GPT-4o or o1 to GPT-4o mini.
  3. GPT-4o mini is optimized for low latency and processes tokens up to twice as fast as larger reasoning models.

When to escalate

If ChatGPT remains slow across multiple devices (desktop and mobile), on different network connections (Wi-Fi and mobile data), and across new chat threads, the issue is account-specific or a localized node failure on OpenAI's CDN. Log into the OpenAI Help Center (help.openai.com) and use the chat bubble in the bottom right corner to report a persistent latency issue. Provide your location, ISP, and your account email address.
