How to Change Your Claude Account Email
Updated 9/15/2026
Unlike many web services, Anthropic does not currently offer a self-service "Change Email" button inside the Claude.ai user settings dashboard. This is due to security restrictions and how accounts are linked to third-party identity providers (like Google or Apple OAuth).
If you have lost access to your login email, changed jobs, or want to switch your login credentials, you must follow specific procedures to protect your data and subscriptions.
---
Understand Your Login Method
Before taking action, you need to understand how you log in:
- Social Logins (Google / Apple): If you sign in using the "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple" buttons, your account is tied directly to those external identity providers. You cannot change this to a standard email/password login or a different Google/Apple account manually.
- Passwordless Email Login: If you enter your email manually and receive a one-time login code via email, your profile is linked to that specific inbox.
Because direct account merging is not supported, you must follow these steps to transition your account safely.
---
Step 1: Export Your Chat History
Because you may need to register a new account under your new email address, you should back up your existing data. Anthropic allows you to download your account data directly from your settings.
- Log in to your current account at claude.ai.
- Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Click on Settings.
- Scroll down to the Account section and click Export Data.
- Confirm the export. A link containing a JSON file of your chat conversations will be sent to your current email address. Download this file to your computer.
---
Step 2: Cancel Your Current Claude Pro Subscription
If you are transitioning to a new email address, you must cancel the billing on your old account to avoid being billed twice.
- Inside the settings panel of your old account, click Billing or Manage Subscription.
- Click Cancel Plan and follow the prompts.
- Note down your final billing date so you know when to activate Claude Pro on your new account.
---
Step 3: Set Up Your New Claude Account
Once you have secured your old data and stopped automatic billing, create your new account.
- Open a clean browser window or use incognito mode.
- Go to claude.ai and log out of your old account if you are still signed in.
- Enter your new email address in the registration field, or click "Continue with Google/Apple" to link your new email account.
- Follow the phone verification prompts. (Note: You can use the same phone number used on your previous account, but if the system throws a verification error, you will need to request a migration as detailed below).
---
Step 4: Request a Manual Email Migration
If you have a Claude Pro subscription or enterprise team data that you absolutely must migrate to a new email address without losing setup configuration, you must request a backend change from Anthropic.
- Navigate to the [Anthropic Support Center](https://support.anthropic.com/).
- Open the support chat widget in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Account Access & Login as your main issue category.
- Clearly state that you need to change your account email address.
- Provide the support team with:
- Your current account email.
- The new target email (ensure you have already created it and verified ownership).
- Proof of purchase for your last subscription payment (Stripe invoice ID or PDF receipt).
---
When to Escalate
Contact support immediately if you have lost access to your original email account (e.g., your school or corporate domain was deactivated) and you cannot access the verification codes required to log in and cancel your subscription. In this scenario, explain clearly that you cannot access the primary email address, and provide your credit card's last 4 digits and billing zip code so support can find and disable the old account to prevent unauthorized charges.
