Fix Claude Error 500, 503, and 504 Status Codes

Updated 8/15/2026

Understanding Claude 5xx Server Errors

When Claude.ai displays an "Internal Server Error" or returns status codes like 500, 503, or 504, the system is indicating a communication failure between your web browser and the Anthropic host servers. Unlike local user errors, 5xx errors mean the problem originates on the server side or at the Content Delivery Network (CDN) level.

  • Error 500 (Internal Server Error): A general-purpose error showing that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request.
  • Error 503 (Service Unavailable): The server is temporarily unable to handle the request, usually due to high traffic volume, maintenance, or capacity limits.
  • Error 504 (Gateway Timeout): The gateway server timed out waiting for a response from the upstream application servers, often happening during complex code compilation or massive prompt processing.

While these issues are often resolved on the server side, local browser states can sometimes cache corrupted routing paths, keeping you stuck in an error loop even after the server recovers. Below are the steps to resolve and bypass these errors.

How to Fix Claude Error 500, 503, and 504

1. Perform a Hard Refresh Standard browser reloading retrieves cached versions of the error page. You must force the browser to request a fresh copy of Claude.ai directly from the host servers.

  • On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or hold Ctrl and click the browser's Refresh icon.
  • On macOS (Safari, Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R or hold Shift and click the Refresh icon.

2. Clear Local Site Data and Cookies Corrupt browser cookies or expired session state parameters can trigger 500 errors when communicating with the Claude authentication servers.

  1. In your browser's address bar, click the tune/lock icon next to claude.ai.
  2. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  3. Click Clear data or delete all stored cookies related to claude.ai and anthropic.com.
  4. Close your browser, reopen it, and navigate back to the site.

3. Check for CDN Routing and VPN Interference Claude.ai uses Cloudflare to mitigate traffic surges and malicious requests. If your VPN or proxy routes through an IP address flagged by Cloudflare, you may receive 503 or 504 gateway timeouts.

  1. Temporarily disable your VPN or proxy server.
  2. Swap your DNS servers to a public, low-latency provider like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1).
  3. Attempt to connect using a different internet connection, such as a mobile data hotspot, to isolate ISP-specific routing issues.

4. Switch to the API Console or Mobile App When the primary web application (`claude.ai`) suffers from web-app server issues, the underlying API structure often remains operational. If you have an API key, you can access models through the Anthropic Console.

  1. Navigate to console.anthropic.com.
  2. Create a temporary testing prompt in the Workbench to see if the models are responding.
  3. Alternatively, open the official Claude iOS or Android app, which routes traffic through different server clusters than the desktop web portal.

Checking the Official Claude Status

Before spending too much time troubleshooting, verify if Anthropic is experiencing a widespread system outage.

  1. Visit status.anthropic.com (the official status dashboard).
  2. Look at the status of "Claude.ai" and the "API".
  3. Check the incident history at the bottom of the page to see if engineering teams are actively investigating degraded performance, elevated error rates, or service disruptions.
  4. If the status page reports an active outage, your only course of action is to wait until services are restored.

When to Escalate

If the official status page indicates that all systems are operational but you continue to experience persistent 500 or 503 errors across multiple devices and networks for more than an hour, escalate the issue. Contact the support team via the Help button inside the Anthropic Console or through the help center at support.anthropic.com. Be sure to provide them with the exact error message, your geographic location, your account email, and any console logs (accessible by pressing F12 in your browser) showing the failing network requests.
