Claude Pro International Card Declined? Troubleshoot Stripe
Updated 9/17/2026
When upgrading to Claude Pro, users outside the United States often encounter card declines. Because Anthropic uses Stripe to process subscription payments, strict security protocols are enforced. If your international credit or debit card is being rejected, it is typically due to strict address verification, lack of 3D Secure support, or geographical cross-border transaction blocks.
Use this guide to diagnose why Stripe is rejecting your international payment and how to complete your Claude Pro subscription.
Why Claude Rejects International Credit Cards
Stripe checks several parameters before processing a transaction. Common reasons for declines include: * Missing 3D Secure (3DS) Authentication: Many international banks require multi-factor authentication (such as an SMS code or mobile app approval) for online purchases. If the merchant checkout flow doesn't trigger this prompt correctly, the bank blocks the charge. * ZIP/Postal Code Mismatch: Stripe cross-checks the postal code entered on the checkout screen with the billing address registered with your bank. Slight formatting differences can trigger a security decline. * Cross-Border Transaction Restrictions: Some banks block automated foreign transactions by default to protect against fraud, especially if the transaction is routed to a US-based entity (Anthropic).
How to Resolve International Payment Failures
If your card is declined, follow these steps to correct your billing setup:
- Verify and Match Billing Details Exactly:
- Ensure the name, card number, expiry date, and CVV are correct.
- Enter your postal code or ZIP code exactly as it appears on your bank statements. If your country does not use postal codes, try entering 00000 or leaving the field blank if the interface permits.
- Enable International Purchases with Your Bank:
- Log into your online banking app or call your bank's customer service number (usually printed on the back of your card).
- Ask if there is a pending block on international transactions or transactions from merchants located in the United States.
- Request that they whitelist "Anthropic" or "Stripe" for recurring subscription charges.
- Ensure 3D Secure is Active:
- Confirm with your financial institution that your card supports 3D Secure (also known as Visa Secure, Mastercard Identity Check, or Amex SafeKey).
- Keep your mobile phone handy when clicking the "Subscribe" button, as you must immediately authorize the verification prompt if one is sent by your bank.
- Use Link (by Stripe) for Checkout:
- If you see the option to save your payment details with "Link" during checkout, try using it. Link is Stripe’s native checkout manager. Pre-registering your card details through Link can bypass local browser-level verification bugs.
- Try an Alternative International Payment Method:
- Virtual Credit Cards: If your physical bank card is repeatedly rejected, services like Wise, Revolut, or local virtual card providers often have better compatibility with international US-based Stripe checkouts.
- Apple Pay / Google Pay: If checkout options on your mobile device support Apple Pay or Google Pay, use them. These wallets use device-specific tokens that bypass traditional postal code checks and manual 3DS steps.
When to Escalate to Anthropic Support
If you have confirmed with your bank that the transaction is not being blocked on their end, but Claude still displays a decline screen, the issue may be on the merchant processor side.
To escalate this issue, go to the Anthropic Help Center, click the support chat widget, and select "Billing and Subscriptions." Provide the support team with the last four digits of your card, your card network (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), your country of origin, and the exact error code or message displayed during checkout. Do not send your full card number or security code over support channels.
