Claude Is Not Available in Your Country: How to Fix
Updated 8/18/2026
Anthropic restricts access to Claude.ai based on geographical regions due to regulatory compliance, local privacy laws, and server capacity allocations. If you see the error message "Claude is not yet available in your region" or "Unsupported Country," your connection has been flagged as originating from an unsupported area.
Even if you live in a supported region (like the United States, United Kingdom, or European Union), network configurations, active VPNs, and browser settings can trigger false positives. Use this troubleshooting guide to resolve location-based access blocks on Claude.
Why Does Claude Block Your Region?
Anthropic checks three primary data points to determine your location when you attempt to log in or sign up: 1. Your IP Address: The numerical label assigned to your device by your internet service provider (ISP). 2. Your Phone Number Country Code: Used during the mandatory SMS verification step. 3. Your Billing Address Country: Checked when processing payments for Claude Pro.
If any of these three data points point to an unsupported country, or if they conflict with one another, your account access will be blocked.
Step 1: Disable VPNs, Proxies, and iCloud Private Relay
Active Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and secure proxies are the most common cause of false geoblocks. If your VPN routing server is in an unsupported region, or if Claude detects a known commercial VPN IP address, it will automatically block the connection.
- Disconnect your VPN client entirely. Do not simply pause it; close the application.
- Disable any browser-level proxy extensions or system-wide proxy servers.
- For Apple Users: If you are using Safari on macOS or iOS, turn off iCloud Private Relay. Go to System Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Private Relay and toggle it off.
- Clear your browser's cache and cookies to remove any stored location tokens.
- Restart your browser and navigate back to claude.ai to test the connection.
- *Alternative:* If you are in an officially unsupported country, using a high-quality residential VPN set to a supported country (e.g., USA) may allow entry, but be aware that using VPNs to bypass geo-restrictions violates Anthropic's Terms of Service and can result in account suspension.
Step 2: Match Your Device's IP with Your DNS Server
Sometimes, your ISP routes your traffic through a DNS server located in a different country, or your browser is configured to use a secure DNS that masks your true region. This mismatch triggers Claude’s security systems.
- Visit a site like dnsleaktest.com to verify that your IP address and DNS servers are in the same country.
- If they mismatch, open your system network settings and change your DNS servers to a global, neutral provider like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) or Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
- Flush your DNS cache. On Windows, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns. On macOS, open Terminal and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
Step 3: Use a Supported Phone Number and Payment Method
Even if you successfully bypass the initial IP check, Claude requires mobile phone verification to prevent bot signups.
- When prompted for phone verification, you must provide a valid mobile number from a supported country.
- Virtual Numbers (VOIP): Claude blocks Google Voice, Skype, and other VOIP numbers. You must use a physical SIM/eSIM from a legitimate mobile carrier.
- If you are upgrading to Claude Pro, the country associated with your credit card billing address must match the country from which you are registering. If you try to pay with an international card from an unsupported country, Stripe will reject the transaction and lock the account.
Step 4: Access Claude via Third-Party API Platforms
If you live in an unsupported region and cannot access Claude.ai directly, you can still access the Claude models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus) via developer platforms that have more relaxed geographical restrictions:
- Anthropic Console (API): The developer API often has different country availability lists than the consumer Claude.ai web interface. Check the Anthropic Console region list.
- Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI: If your business has a cloud account with AWS or Google Cloud, you can access Claude models through these platforms within your own regional cloud tenants.
- Alternative AI Aggregators: Platforms like Poe, OpenRouter, or Perplexity license Claude models and allow access in regions where Claude's native web app is blocked.
When to Escalate
If you are physically located in a supported region, are not using a VPN, and still see the error, escalate the issue to Anthropic: * Email support@anthropic.com with the subject "False Positive Region Block." * Provide your ISP name, your physical city/country, and a screenshot of your IP address from an IP location lookup tool. This helps Anthropic update their geofencing databases.
