Claude Pro Charged After Cancellation: How to Fix

Updated 9/6/2026

Discovering a recurring charge for Claude Pro after you thought you canceled your subscription is incredibly frustrating. This issue usually stems from one of three scenarios: an incomplete cancellation process, holding multiple Claude accounts under different emails, or a payment processing lag. This guide will help you isolate the cause of the post-cancellation charge and resolve it.

Step 1: Verify cancellation status in the billing portal

Many users click "Cancel Plan" but fail to complete the multi-step confirmation process required by the Stripe billing integration. You must confirm that your account is officially in a canceled state.

  1. Sign in to your Claude account on a desktop browser.
  2. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to Billing and click Manage Subscription to access the Stripe billing dashboard.
  4. Look at the status shown next to your plan. If it says "Active" and lists a renewal date rather than an expiration date, the cancellation did not complete successfully.
  5. If it is still active, click Cancel Plan and make sure you follow the prompts all the way through to the final confirmation screen. You should receive an automated email confirming your subscription has been set to cancel at the end of the billing period.

Step 2: Check for multiple or duplicate Claude accounts

If your active account shows that it was canceled, but you are still being charged, you likely have a duplicate Claude account you forgot about. This is common if you fluctuate between different login methods:

  • Google Auth vs. Email Login: Logging in with user@gmail.com via the Google OAuth button and typing user@gmail.com directly into the email field can sometimes create separate accounts if handled differently by security protocols.
  • Work vs. Personal Emails: Check all alternative email addresses (such as work emails or secondary Gmail addresses) to see if you accidentally started a Claude Pro subscription on another profile.
  • Search your inboxes: Search every email account you own for the term "Anthropic" or "Stripe" to locate the specific email address associated with the unexpected charge.

Step 3: Differentiate pending authorizations from settled charges

If you canceled your plan right before your billing cycle renewed, your bank may display a "Pending" transaction on your statement.

  • Pending Authorization: This is a temporary hold placed by your bank. If you canceled before the renewal date, Stripe will automatically release this hold within 3 to 5 business days, and the charge will disappear without actually debiting your account.
  • Settled Transaction: If the charge moves from "Pending" to "Posted" or "Settled," the transaction was fully processed, and you must proceed with contacting support for a refund.

Step 4: Contact support with billing evidence

To resolve a charge that occurred after a confirmed cancellation, you must submit a ticket with proof of your prior cancellation.

  1. Go to support.anthropic.com.
  2. Open the support chat messenger in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Select Billing & Payments > Charged After Cancellation.
  4. Provide the Stripe invoice ID (which starts with in_) from your receipt and a screenshot of your cancellation confirmation email or the Stripe portal showing the canceled state.
  5. Clearly state the date you originally canceled your subscription and request a reversal of the post-cancellation charge.

When to escalate

If Anthropic support does not respond within 7 days, or if they refuse to refund a charge that clearly occurred after you canceled your service, contact your bank or credit card issuer. Provide your bank with the cancellation confirmation email containing the date stamp as proof that the merchant processed an unauthorized charge. They can initiate a chargeback to recover your funds.
