How to Change Your Claude Account Email Address
Updated 9/23/2026
Can You Directly Change Your Claude Email?
Anthropic does not currently provide a self-service tool to change the email address of an existing Claude.ai account. Your chat history, billing profile, and login credentials are tied directly to the unique email address or Google SSO ID you used when creating your account.
To move your Claude activity to a different email (e.g., from a school address to a personal address), you must perform a manual migration. Use this step-by-step guide to migrate your subscription, save your data, and transition to a new email securely.
Step 1: Export Your Chat History Manually
Because accounts cannot be merged, your chat history on your old email will not transfer to your new email. You must manually back up critical conversations before closing your old account.
- Log in to your old Claude account on claude.ai.
- Open each conversation thread that contains important code snippets, outlines, or written work.
- Scroll through the chat, highlight the essential text, and copy it.
- Paste the text into an external document (such as Notion, Google Docs, or a local text editor).
- Note: There is currently no automated system to export your complete chat library to JSON or CSV on consumer-tier accounts, so you must copy critical data manually.
Step 2: Cancel Your Claude Pro Subscription
If you have an active Claude Pro subscription, you cannot transfer the subscription directly to another email address. You must cancel the active plan on your old email to avoid double billing.
- On your old Claude account, click your initials or profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Click on Settings from the pop-up menu.
- Navigate to the Billing tab or click Manage Subscription.
- This will redirect you to the Stripe billing portal. Click Cancel Plan.
- Confirm the cancellation. Your Pro features will remain active until the end of your current billing cycle.
Step 3: Create the New Account
Once you have cancelled your old subscription and saved your chat logs, you can set up your new account.
- Open an incognito browser window or log out of your old Claude profile.
- Go to the Claude registration page (claude.ai/login).
- Enter your new email address in the field or click Continue with Google to use Google SSO with your new address.
- Check your new email inbox for the verification link (Magic Link) and click it to complete registration.
- Complete the basic onboarding steps, including phone number verification. Note: If your phone number is still tied to your old account, you may need to wait for the old account to become inactive, or use a different phone number if the system states the number is already in use.
Step 4: Upgrade the New Account to Claude Pro
Once your old billing cycle has completely ended, you can upgrade your new account.
- Log in to your new Claude account.
- Click your initials in the bottom-left corner.
- Click Upgrade to Pro.
- Enter your payment details in the checkout window to restart your subscription under your new email address.
Option 5: Domain Migrations for Team Plans
If you are on a Claude Team plan, organization administrators can change user email addresses and migrate domains from the console interface.
- The Team Administrator must log in to the Claude Console (console.anthropic.com).
- Navigate to the Members tab.
- Click Invite Member and enter the user's new email address.
- Assign the appropriate role and seat to the new email address.
- Once the user accepts the invite, the Admin can safely delete the user's old email address from the team roster, freeing up the license seat.
When to Escalate
If you lose access to your old email address before you can cancel your Claude Pro subscription, you will continue to be billed. You must escalate this to billing support. Send an email to billing@anthropic.com or contact them via the Help Center chat widget. Provide your old email address, the last four digits of the credit card being charged, the card network (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), and the date of the last charge. Request that support manually terminate the subscription on the locked account.
