How to Fix Claude 500 Internal Server Error

Updated 9/4/2026

An HTTP 500 Internal Server Error is a generic error message indicating that Anthropic's servers encountered an unexpected condition that prevented them from fulfilling your request. While this is primarily a server-side issue, local session data, browser states, or specific malformed payloads can trigger or prolong this state.

Before assuming Claude is completely offline for everyone, you can run through these systematic troubleshooting steps to isolate and resolve the issue on your end.

1. Force-Reset Your Active Chat Session Often, a 500 Internal Server Error is localized to a single corrupted conversation thread. If a database transaction fails or a processing node crashes mid-stream, that specific thread can become permanently unreadable.

  1. Navigate away from the broken thread by clicking the Claude logo in the top-left corner to start a new chat.
  2. Attempt to send a simple, short message (e.g., "Hello") in the new thread.
  3. If the new chat works, the previous thread is corrupted. Do not attempt to reuse it; export or copy what you can from the sidebar if accessible, then delete the broken thread to clean up your session database.

2. Clear Site-Specific Data and Active Cookies Old browser sessions and cached tokens can conflict with updated server-side configurations, leading to recurring 500 errors.

  • On Chrome / Edge / Brave:
  • Click the padlock or settings icon to the left of the URL in your address bar.
  • Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  • Click Manage cookies and site data and choose to delete all local storage, cookies, and cache for claude.ai.
  • Reload the page and log back in manually.
  • On Safari:
  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
  • Search for anthropic and claude, then click Remove All.
  • Restart your browser and attempt to access Claude again.

3. Reduce Input Payload Size and Attachments Large context inputs, complex PDF attachments, or extensive system prompts can exceed server timeout thresholds, resulting in a sudden 500 error instead of a standard graceful timeout error.

  1. If your query includes attached files (such as .csv, .pdf, or .txt), remove them and attempt to submit the text query alone.
  2. If the text prompt is extremely long (over 10,000 words), split it into smaller, logical chunks.
  3. Avoid uploading image files with extremely high resolutions or unsupported formats; convert them to standard JPEG or PNG formats under 5MB before uploading.
  4. Try sending the prompt without any active "Projects" or custom system instructions enabled to ensure a clean prompt state.

4. Route Around Regional CDN Edges Anthropic uses Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to distribute traffic. A local edge server experiencing issues can return a 500 error while the primary Anthropic servers are healthy.

  1. Turn on a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN).
  2. Select a server in a different region or country where Claude is officially supported (e.g., if you are on the US East Coast, try routing through US West or Western Europe).
  3. Re-authenticate your session. This forces your browser to connect to a different CDN edge node, bypassing localized server routing failures.

5. Switch to the Developer Console or API If the consumer web interface (`claude.ai`) is throwing persistent 500 errors, the backend API engines might still be fully operational. You can test and continue your work using the developer sandbox.

  1. Go to console.anthropic.com and log in with your developer credentials.
  2. Click on the Workbench tab.
  3. Select your desired model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet) and paste your prompt.
  4. Click Run. If this works, the outage is limited to the consumer web app interface, and you can temporarily use the Workbench for critical tasks.

When to escalate If you have cleared your local cache, successfully initiated new threads, tested across different network regions via VPN, and verified that both the main site and the developer console consistently return 500 Internal Server Errors, the issue lies entirely on Anthropic's backend. In this case, you cannot fix the error yourself. Monitor official status updates and wait for their engineering team to deploy a hotfix.
