Claude at Capacity Error: How to Bypass & Fix

Updated 9/13/2026

When Anthropic's servers experience sudden spikes in traffic, the web interface of Claude may display a "Claude is currently at capacity" message. This error occurs when the server clusters responsible for processing web-based LLM queries reach their compute allocation limits. While this is a server-side limitation, you can often bypass the queue by utilizing alternative API routing, clearing stuck browser states, or forcing a new session on a different server cluster.

Below are the practical troubleshooting steps to resolve or bypass this error.

1. Clear Browser Service Workers and Cache Often, your browser remains locked to a specific, overloaded server node because of persistent service workers or session cookies. Forcing a clean connection can route you to an active, less congested server node.

  1. Open Claude in your browser.
  2. Open your browser's Developer Tools (press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows, Cmd+Option+I on Mac).
  3. Go to the Application tab (Chrome/Edge) or Storage tab (Firefox).
  4. In the left sidebar, click on Storage.
  5. Check the box for Clear site data (including service workers, local storage, and cookies) and click Clear site data.
  6. Force-refresh the page by holding Ctrl and pressing F5 (or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac).
  7. Attempt to log back in.

2. Bypass the Web UI via the Anthropic Console When the main consumer interface (claude.ai) is at capacity, the developer API platform (console.anthropic.com) often remains fully functional. Anthropic allocates separate compute pools for API users to protect commercial integrations from consumer traffic spikes.

  1. Navigate to [console.anthropic.com](https://console.anthropic.com/) and sign in. You can use your existing credentials or create a developer account.
  2. Go to the Workbench tab.
  3. Ensure you have a small amount of credit in your billing section (as low as $5 is accepted).
  4. Select your preferred model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet) from the settings panel on the right.
  5. Paste your prompt into the User field and click Run.

Because the API charges per token rather than a flat monthly fee, this is an excellent, low-cost fallback that bypasses consumer web traffic queues entirely.

3. Route Through a VPN to Target Different Clusters Anthropic distributes its server loads geographically. If your local region is experiencing peak demand (such as business hours in the US), routing your traffic through a different timezone can connect you to an underutilized server cluster.

  1. Close all active Claude tabs in your browser.
  2. Open your VPN application.
  3. Connect to a server in a region where it is currently nighttime or early morning (for example, if you are in the US, try connecting to a European node like Germany or the UK).
  4. Open an Incognito/Private window in your browser.
  5. Navigate to Claude and log in again.

4. Switch Between Web and Mobile Apps The Claude iOS and Android applications utilize different API endpoints and load balancers than the desktop web client. If the desktop web application is displaying the capacity error, switching platforms can bypass the bottleneck.

  1. Download the official Claude app from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi on your mobile device and switch to cellular data (this changes your IP routing and DNS resolution path).
  3. Log in to your account and attempt to send your prompt.

When to Escalate If you have tried the steps above and still receive the at-capacity error, check the official status page at status.anthropic.com to see if there is a major system outage. If the status page reports all systems operational, but you are a Claude Pro or Team plan subscriber still locked out after 30 minutes, open a ticket via the **Support** widget in the bottom right corner of the Claude login page, or email support@anthropic.com with your account email and a screenshot of the capacity screen.
