Claude 502 Bad Gateway Error: Step-by-Step Fixes

Updated 9/18/2026

An HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error on Claude.ai indicates that one server on the internet received an invalid response from another upstream server. When this happens on Claude, it typically means Anthropic's edge gateway provider (usually Cloudflare) cannot establish a stable connection with the backend servers hosting the AI application.

While this error frequently points to an internal Anthropic infrastructure outage, localized network configurations, corrupted browser cache files, and DNS routing issues can also trigger it on your end. Use the following structured steps to diagnose, bypass, and resolve a 502 Bad Gateway error.

1. Perform a Hard Browser Refresh Standard browser reloads often pull data directly from your local cache, which may still store the corrupted 502 state. Performing a hard refresh bypasses the local cache and forces your browser to request a fresh copy of Claude from the server.

  • On Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5, or hold Ctrl and click the Reload button.
  • On Mac (Safari): Hold Shift and click the Reload button. Or press Cmd + Option + E to empty the cache, then Cmd + R to reload.
  • On Mac (Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R.

If the 502 error was caused by a transient blip in the edge network, a hard refresh will restore the interface immediately.

2. Clear Claude-Specific Site Data Corrupted cookies or active session states can trap your connection in a 502 loop even after the server-side issue is resolved. Instead of clearing your entire browser history, clear only the data associated with Claude.

  1. Open Claude.ai in your browser.
  2. Click the lock icon or settings icon located on the far left of the browser’s address bar.
  3. Select Site Settings or Cookies and site data.
  4. Click Manage cookies and site data (or Clear data).
  5. Remove all stored cookies and local storage for claude.ai and anthropic.com.
  6. Restart your browser and attempt to log back in.

3. Flush and Reset Your DNS Cache Outdated or corrupted Domain Name System (DNS) records on your local machine can route your requests to an unreachable IP address, causing the edge network to return a 502 Gateway error.

  • On Windows:
  • Open the Start menu, type cmd, and run the Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
  • Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter to reset the network catalog.
  • On macOS:
  • Open Terminal (via Spotlight Search or Applications > Utilities).
  • Type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and press Enter.
  • Input your administrator password to complete the command.

Once completed, restart your browser and test the connection.

4. Change to a Public DNS Resolver If your local Internet Service Provider (ISP) is experiencing routing issues to Anthropic’s servers, switching to a reliable public DNS provider can resolve the 502 error.

  1. Open your operating system’s Network Settings.
  2. Locate your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and open its properties.
  3. Find the IPv4 DNS server settings and switch from automatic/ISP-assigned to manual.
  4. Enter one of the following secure public DNS pairs:
  5. Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
  6. Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  7. Save the settings, restart your network adapter, and try accessing Claude.

5. Switch to the API Workbench as a Temporary Backup If Claude.ai remains down with a 502 error but the underlying Anthropic engine is functional, you can often bypass the primary web frontend using the Developer Console.

  1. Navigate to console.anthropic.com.
  2. Sign in with your standard Claude credentials (or create a developer account).
  3. Go to the Workbench tab.
  4. Select your preferred Claude model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet) from the dropdown.
  5. Write your prompt in the user field and click Run.

*Note: Using the Developer Console Workbench consumes API credits rather than relying on your Claude Pro flat monthly subscription, but it serves as an excellent emergency fallback during major web outages.*

When to Escalate If you have completed all the steps and still receive a persistent 502 Bad Gateway error across multiple devices and networks, the issue is on Anthropic's side. Check the official status page at `status.anthropic.com` for active incident reports. If the status page reports all systems operational but your access remains blocked, contact support via the Help Center widget in the bottom-right corner of the console or email support@anthropic.com with your public IP address and the exact Cloudflare Ray ID displayed at the bottom of the 502 error page.
