How to Fix Claude Error 503 Service Unavailable
Updated 9/7/2026
Understanding the Claude 503 Service Unavailable Error
The HTTP 503 Service Unavailable error is a server-side status code indicating that Claude's servers are temporarily unable to handle your request. This typically happens for two reasons: Anthropic is experiencing an unexpected traffic spike that has exhausted server capacity, or engineers are conducting scheduled database maintenance.
Because 503 errors originate on the server side, the root cause must be resolved by Anthropic. However, client-side caching, localized CDN routing issues, and session states can often trap your browser in a 503 loop even after the servers recover. Follow these steps to resolve and bypass the error.
1. Check the Official Anthropic Status Page Before changing any local settings, verify if the outage is universal. Anthropic maintains a real-time status tracker that monitors the Claude web app, the Developer Console, and the API.
- Navigate to status.anthropic.com in your browser.
- Check the operational status of "Claude Web App" and "API".
- If the page displays "Major Outage" or "Degraded Performance," the servers are genuinely offline. You must wait for Anthropic's engineering team to deploy a fix.
- If all systems are marked "Operational," the issue is likely localized to your network route or browser session.
2. Perform a Hard Refresh to Bypass Cached 503 Screens Browsers and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) often cache error pages to save bandwidth. If Claude went down and came back up, your browser might still show a cached 503 page.
- On Windows (Chrome, Firefox, Edge): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
- On macOS (Safari, Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R or hold Shift and click the Reload button.
- This forces your browser to bypass the cache and request a fresh copy of the site directly from Anthropic's active servers.
3. Clear Domain-Specific Cookies and Local Storage Corrupt session tokens can trigger server-side rejections that manifest as generic 503 errors. Clearing the site-specific cookies for Claude will force a clean login session.
- In your browser's address bar, click the settings/lock icon next to claude.ai.
- Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
- Click Clear data or delete all listed cookies for claude.ai and anthropic.com.
- Restart your browser, navigate back to the site, and log in again.
4. Switch to Google or Cloudflare DNS Sometimes, regional Domain Name System (DNS) servers provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) fail to update the IP addresses of Claude’s dynamic scaling servers during a traffic spike.
- Open your operating system's Network Settings.
- Locate your active connection and open its TCP/IPv4 properties.
- Change your DNS server addresses to one of the following public DNS providers:
- Google DNS: Primary 8.8.8.8 / Secondary 8.8.4.4
- Cloudflare DNS: Primary 1.1.1.1 / Secondary 1.0.0.1
- Flush your system DNS cache. On Windows, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns. On macOS, open Terminal and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
5. Shift to the Anthropic API Console as a Backup If you have an urgent project and the main `claude.ai` interface is down with a 503 error, the API gateway often remains active because it runs on a different infrastructure tier.
- Navigate to console.anthropic.com.
- Log in using your developer credentials (or create an account).
- Access the Workbench tab.
- You can interact with Claude models directly inside the Workbench. Note that this usage is billed per token, requiring a small prepaid balance, but it bypasses the consumer web application entirely.
When to escalate If the Anthropic status page shows "All Systems Operational," but you continue to receive a 503 error across multiple devices and networks for more than an hour, file a ticket. Collect your external IP address and any console log errors (accessible by pressing `F12` in your browser and selecting the Console tab). Submit this technical data to the official support channel at `support.anthropic.com`.
