How to Fix Claude Error 524 (A Timeout Occurred)
Updated 9/23/2026
An HTTP Error 524: A timeout occurred is a Cloudflare-specific status code. It indicates that your web browser successfully connected to Cloudflare's edge servers, and Cloudflare contacted Anthropic's origin servers, but Anthropic's servers failed to respond to the request within the standard 100-second timeout window.
This error almost always points to a backend timeout: Claude's server received your prompt, but got stuck trying to process it, or the server crashed mid-generation. Use the following troubleshooting steps to resolve this timeout loop.
Step 1: Force-Refresh to Clear the Cloudflare Handshake If the origin server recovered but your browser is stuck displaying a cached Cloudflare error page, you must perform a hard reload.
- On Windows/Linux, press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R on your keyboard while on the Claude tab.
- On macOS, press Cmd + Shift + R in Safari or Chrome.
- If the page still displays the 524 error screen, close the tab, clear your browser's application cache for claude.ai via developer tools, and reopen the site in a fresh tab.
Step 2: Enable Response Streaming If you are accessing Claude via an API, integration, or custom client, you might encounter 524 errors on highly complex prompts because Cloudflare cuts off connections that don't send data for 100 seconds.
- Ensure that your API call has streaming enabled (stream: true).
- When streaming is enabled, Claude's server sends tokens to your client one by one as they are generated, rather than waiting to generate the entire response before sending it.
- This continuous data stream keeps the HTTP connection active, preventing Cloudflare from timing out the request with a 524 error.
Step 3: Shorten Your Prompt Context Extremely long prompts—especially those containing dozens of uploaded source code files, long PDFs, or recursive logical prompts—take much longer for Claude to parse and process. If the processing time exceeds 100 seconds, Cloudflare will drop the connection and return a 524.
- Break down your task into smaller steps. Instead of asking Claude to write a 2,000-word essay or parse a 300-page document in one turn, ask it to analyze a single chapter or section at a time.
- Remove unneeded files, images, or historical messages from the active chat window to speed up generation time.
Step 4: Switch IP Addresses to Bypass Congested Gateways Cloudflare routes traffic dynamically based on your physical location. If a localized Cloudflare or Anthropic node is experiencing a queue bottleneck, you can bypass it by changing your virtual location.
- Enable a VPN and select a server in a different country or state. This forces Cloudflare to assign your traffic to a different gateway server, which may have a faster path to Anthropic's origin database.
- If you are on a cellular connection, try switching to a terrestrial broadband Wi-Fi connection, or vice versa, to refresh your external IP address lease.
When to Escalate If you consistently encounter Error 524 across different browsers, devices, networks, and simplified prompts, the issue is likely a localized cloud outage on Anthropic's end. Keep an eye on `status.anthropic.com`. If no incident is posted after an hour of persistent 524 timeouts, capture a screenshot of the Cloudflare Ray ID listed at the bottom of the error page and send it to Anthropic support so they can trace the specific server node failure.
