How to Fix Claude Error Loading Chats
Updated 9/13/2026
If you log into Claude and find that your chat history is missing, a spinning loading icon persists in the left sidebar, or you receive an "Error loading chats" banner, your browser is likely struggling to sync with Anthropic's database servers. This issue is typically caused by local storage corruption, active WebSocket blocks, or transient database latency on Anthropic's backend.
Follow these troubleshooting steps to force your chat history to sync and load correctly.
1. Clear Browser IndexedDB and Local Storage Claude uses a local database system called IndexedDB in your browser to cache chat metadata and speed up navigation. If this local database becomes corrupted or goes out of sync with Anthropic's servers, the sidebar will fail to load.
- Open your browser and navigate to Claude.
- Press F12 (Windows) or Cmd+Option+I (Mac) to open Developer Tools.
- Navigate to the Application tab (Chrome/Edge/Brave) or the Storage tab (Firefox).
- In the left panel, expand IndexedDB.
- Right-click on the database associated with claude.ai and select Delete.
- Expand Local Storage in the same left panel, right-click the https://claude.ai entry, and click Clear.
- Reload the page (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R).
2. Force Direct URL Navigation When the sidebar fails to render, the entire UI can freeze because the application script is waiting for a database response. You can bypass the sidebar loading sequence by forcing the browser to load a fresh, unassociated chat session directly.
- In your browser's address bar, clear the URL and type: https://claude.ai/new
- Press Enter.
- If the main text input area loads, type a quick prompt (e.g., "Hello") and send it. This often forces the database engine to establish a fresh connection and refreshes the sidebar synchronization logic.
3. Disable Adblockers and Privacy Shields Claude’s database synchronization relies heavily on persistent WebSocket connections and background API fetch requests. Aggressive adblockers or privacy shields (like Brave Shields or uBlock Origin) can mistake these synchronization requests for tracking scripts and block them.
- Look at your browser’s extension bar and click on your adblocker icon.
- Toggle the blocker OFF for claude.ai.
- If you are using the Brave browser, click the orange lion icon in the address bar and toggle Shields are UP to DOWN.
- Refresh the page and check if your chat history appears.
4. Check for API and Database Outages Sometimes, the web server is online, but the backend database cluster storing user conversations is undergoing maintenance or experiencing degraded performance.
- Open a new tab and visit [status.anthropic.com](https://status.anthropic.com/).
- Look closely at the components list. Specifically check for degraded performance under Core API or database-related listings.
- If there is an active incident report stating "Degraded performance on database queries" or "Increased API latency," local troubleshooting will not work. You must wait for Anthropic's engineering team to deploy a fix.
When to Escalate If the official status page reports all systems are operational and you have cleared your browser's IndexedDB database but still cannot load your chats, check if the issue is account-specific. Try logging in via an Incognito window or a different device. If the issue persists across all platforms, your account's database record may be locked or corrupted.
