Fix Claude 'Failed to Send Message' Red Error Banner

Updated 9/16/2026

Why the "Failed to Send Message" Error Occurs

When Claude.ai displays a red "Failed to send message" or "Error sending message" banner, it indicates that your client browser initiated an HTTP POST request or a WebSocket stream that did not receive a valid confirmation handshake from Anthropic's backend. This block typically happens during periods of sudden high demand, local network degradation, or when your current chat session exceeds specific memory buffers allocated by Cloudflare's security layer.

Because the web interface relies on persistent, low-latency connections to stream Claude's real-time tokens back to your device, even a micro-outage in your local network routing or a momentary backend database lock will trigger this error. Follow these structured troubleshooting steps to isolate and resolve the issue.

How to Fix the Red Banner Error

1. Force Refresh and Re-establish the WebSocket Handshake

A standard page refresh often fails to clear stalled service workers or active HTTP/2 multiplexing pipelines that are holding onto a failed connection state.

  • For Windows (Chrome/Edge/Firefox): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R to force a hard reload of the page and bypass the local cache.
  • For macOS (Safari/Chrome/Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R (or hold Shift and click the reload icon in Safari).

If the browser was holding an orphaned connection to an unstable edge server, this forces a lookup of a fresh, healthy routing path.

2. Trim the Active Chat Context

If the red error occurs exclusively within one specific long conversation, you are likely hitting an unhandled context-overflow or local buffer error. Extremely long chats with dozens of attachments require massive payloads to be sent to Anthropic's servers on every turn.

  1. Copy your last few prompts and any essential context to a text editor.
  2. Click the Claude logo in the top-left corner to return to the dashboard.
  3. Click Start a new chat.
  4. Paste the necessary context back in and attempt to send the message.

If the new chat works immediately, the previous thread's database index was temporarily locked or too large to process during a high-load period.

3. Bypass Browser Cache and Local Storage Corruption

Corrupted local states in your browser's IndexedDB or Local Storage can corrupt the metadata payloads sent alongside your messages, causing Anthropic's servers to reject them.

  1. In your browser, navigate to Claude.ai.
  2. Click the padlock icon on the left side of the address bar.
  3. Select Site settings (or Cookies and site data > Manage on-device site data).
  4. Click Clear data or delete all stored cookies and local storage for claude.ai.
  5. Restart your browser entirely, log back into your account, and try sending your message.

4. Adjust MTU Settings and Disable VPN/Proxy Inspections

Many VPNs and security suites use Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to monitor HTTPS traffic. During peak hours, the latency introduced by this inspection combined with Claude's streaming architecture can cause the connection to time out, triggering the red error banner.

  1. Temporarily disable any active VPNs, proxy configurations, or third-party antivirus web shields.
  2. If you are on a corporate network, check if port 443 or WebSockets (wss://) traffic is restricted.
  3. Try switching to a different network connection, such as a mobile hotspot, to determine if your primary Internet Service Provider (ISP) is experiencing packet drops along Anthropic's routing path.

When to Escalate

If you have completed these steps and continue to see the red error message across all chats and multiple web browsers, check the official status page at status.anthropic.com. If the status page reports all systems operational, but you still cannot send messages on any network or device, collect your browser's console logs (Right-click > Inspect > Console tab) showing the red HTTP/WebSocket error codes, and submit a ticket via the in-app support widget or email support@anthropic.com.
