Claude Ignoring Negative Constraints: How to Fix

Updated 9/18/2026

A common point of frustration when working with Large Language Models (LLMs) is when they ignore negative constraints. You write "Do not use external libraries," but Claude imports them anyway. Or you specify "Do not mention our competitors," and Claude includes them in the first paragraph.

This happens because LLMs process tokens sequentially and have difficulty conceptualizing negation. When you prompt Claude "Do not use Python," the tokens for "Python" are heavily weighted in its attention mechanism, paradoxically making the model *more* likely to write Python code.

Here is how to enforce strict negative constraints and stop Claude from outputting forbidden content.

1. Convert Negative Rules into Positive Directives Instead of telling Claude what *not* to do, tell it exactly what to do instead. Rephrasing your instructions as positive, action-oriented directives gives the model a clear path to follow.

  • Instead of: *"Do not use passive voice."*
  • Use: *"Write exclusively in the active voice. Ensure every sentence has a clear subject performing the action."*
  • Instead of: *"Do not write code in JavaScript."*
  • Use: *"Write the entire script in TypeScript only."*

2. Use Claude's Prefill Feature (API & Console Users) If you are accessing Claude via the Anthropic API or the Developer Console, you can exploit a unique capability: prefilling Claude's response. By starting Claude's output for it, you can lock it into your desired format and prevent it from drifting into banned behaviors.

For example, if you want to ensure Claude does not output any conversational preamble:

  • Your Prompt: *"Extract the email addresses from this text. Do not write any introductory text."*
  • Prefill Claude's Response: [ (forcing the model to immediately output a JSON array, bypassing conversational filler).

3. Isolate Constraints Using XML Tags Claude is trained to pay close attention to structural XML tags. If your negative constraints are buried inside a long paragraph of text, they will get lost. Isolate your boundaries clearly so the model processes them as system-level rules.

`xml <negative_constraints> - Never use the term "synergy" or "turnkey". - Do not include any external links or URLs. - Do not write more than three paragraphs. </negative_constraints>

<task> Write a summary of the attached quarterly report following the negative_constraints listed above. </task> `

4. Provide Few-Shot Negative Examples Provide Claude with examples of what a bad response looks like versus what a good response looks like. Showing Claude the exact error you want it to avoid is highly effective.

`text Here is an example of an incorrect response because it contains passive voice: "The project was completed by the team."

Here is an example of a correct response because it uses active voice: "The team completed the project."

Now, rewrite the following text following this active-only rule: [Insert text] `

5. Implement an Explicit Evaluation Step If Claude must follow strict compliance rules, ask the model to double-check its own work before presenting the final answer. You can build this verification loop directly into your prompt.

  • Example addition: *"Before outputting your final response, write a brief, hidden scratchpad analysis checking your draft against the <negative_constraints>. If any constraint is violated, rewrite the draft before presenting it to me."*

This forces Claude to generate the response, review it against the token weight of the negative constraints, and correct itself in a single execution step.

When to escalate If Claude consistently ignores simple, explicit constraints across multiple fresh chats, it may indicate a temporary system-wide model drift or a change in the default system prompt behavior by Anthropic. Check the Anthropic developer forums and discord servers to see if other users are reporting sudden compliance drops. If you are using the API, ensure your `temperature` parameter is not set too high; a temperature closer to `0.0` makes Claude much more deterministic and compliant with strict rules.
