How to Fix Claude Internal Server Error

Updated 9/7/2026

What Causes an Internal Server Error in Claude?

An "Internal Server Error" (typically associated with HTTP status codes 500, 502, or 504) indicates that Claude's servers encountered an unexpected condition that prevented them from fulfilling your request. This error can occur when you submit a prompt on the web interface or make a call to the API.

While the root cause is usually server-side database lag, memory limitations, or microservice timeouts, certain user behaviors—such as submitting massive system prompts, corrupted files, or corrupted browser cookies—can trigger this block. Follow these steps to isolate the issue and fix it.

1. Isolate and Fork the Chat Thread Internal server errors often happen in long, complex conversation threads. As chat logs grow, the context window fills up, and the database can time out trying to process the entire history.

  1. Click the Claude icon in the top left corner to exit your current chat.
  2. Start a brand-new conversation thread.
  3. Keep your initial prompt concise to test if the system responds.
  4. If the new thread works, the previous thread has likely corrupted or hit a system processing limit on the server. Do not attempt to reuse the broken thread.

2. Inspect and Reduce Uploaded File Sizes Uploading large PDFs, complex CSV files, or images with unreadable formatting can crash the backend parser, resulting in an internal server error response.

  1. If your prompt failed while uploading a document, inspect the file.
  2. Ensure the file size is well under the maximum limit (aim for under 10MB for optimal performance).
  3. If it is a PDF, try converting it to plain text (.txt) and pasting the text directly into the chat box instead.
  4. Try uploading the file in smaller, segmented documents rather than one large master file.

3. Check for Interferences from Ad Blockers and Privacy Shields Browser extensions that aggressively block scripts or tracking elements can interfere with the background WebSockets and AJAX requests Claude uses to stream responses, causing the server to return an error.

  1. Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window.
  2. Navigate to claude.ai and log in.
  3. Try to reproduce the error. If it works in Incognito, a browser extension is the cause.
  4. Disable ad-blocking extensions (like uBlock Origin, AdGuard) or privacy wrappers (like Privacy Badger) specifically for the claude.ai and anthropic.com domains.

4. Clear Local Storage and Active Sessions Invalid or expired JSON Web Tokens (JWT) stored in your browser can cause the backend server to reject requests with a generic internal server error.

  1. Open Claude in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
  2. Press F12 to open the Developer Tools, and navigate to the Application (Chrome/Edge) or Storage (Firefox) tab.
  3. Under the left sidebar, expand Local Storage and select https://claude.ai.
  4. Click Clear All or manually delete the keys.
  5. Do the same under Session Storage and Cookies.
  6. Refresh the page and log back in.

5. Audit the Payload and System Instructions (For API Users) If you are receiving this error via the Anthropic API, it is often due to an invalid JSON structure or unsupported model parameters.

  • Verify that your max_tokens parameter does not exceed the model’s absolute limits.
  • Check that you are calling a valid, active model string (e.g., claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022).
  • Ensure your JSON formatting is correct and that system prompts are properly placed in the system parameter block, rather than mixed inside the user messages array.

When to escalate If the internal server error persists on new threads, across multiple browsers, and on different network connections, the issue is a deeper database or account-level lock on Anthropic's side. Navigate to `support.anthropic.com` and open a ticket. Make sure to provide the approximate timestamp of the error, the email associated with your Claude account, and a screenshot of your browser's Developer Tools Console tab showing the failed red network requests.
