Claude Lagging or Freezing? How to Fix Unresponsive Chat

Updated 9/13/2026

When Claude's interface becomes laggy, slow to respond, or freezes entirely mid-sentence, the issue is usually caused by one of three things: excessive conversation context size (token overhead), browser rendering limitations with Server-Sent Events (SSE), or network packet delays. Because Claude processes the entire context window with every new prompt, long chat histories can severely degrade performance.

Use this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to restore fast, smooth performance.

1. Start a New Chat Thread to Clear Token Overhead Every time you send a message in an existing Claude chat, the model must re-process every previous message in that thread. If your conversation contains long code files, dense text, or dozens of back-and-forth messages, the server overhead increases exponentially, resulting in delayed streaming responses.

  1. Click the Claude logo in the upper-left corner to go home.
  2. Click Start a new chat.
  3. Copy only the most critical summary information from your previous chat and paste it as context.
  4. Avoid uploading large documents to a single thread repeatedly. Instead, reference them in fresh, separate threads when possible.

2. Resolve Server-Sent Events (SSE) Network Buffering Claude streams its output letter-by-letter using Server-Sent Events (SSE). If your network router, VPN, or local security software intercepts and buffers these streams, the UI will freeze and then dump large blocks of text all at once, or time out completely.

  1. Disable SSL Inspection: If you run third-party antivirus software (such as Avast, Bitdefender, or Kaspersky), temporarily disable "HTTPS scanning" or "SSL inspection" in the software settings, as these tools buffer streaming tokens to scan them for threats.
  2. Bypass the VPN: Disable your VPN or switch to a protocol optimized for streaming (such as WireGuard instead of OpenVPN TCP).
  3. Switch DNS: Change your system DNS to a faster public resolver like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) to resolve routing delays.

3. Toggle Hardware Acceleration in Your Browser Rendering long blocks of markdown and code syntax highlighting in real-time requires significant GPU processing. If browser hardware acceleration is misconfigured or disabled, your CPU will struggle to keep up with the stream, causing the browser tab to lag or freeze.

  1. Open your browser settings (e.g., in Chrome, click the three dots in the top-right and select Settings).
  2. Search for "hardware acceleration" in the settings search bar.
  3. Locate the setting Use graphics acceleration when available (or similar).
  4. If it is disabled, turn it ON and relaunch your browser.
  5. If it is already enabled, try turning it OFF and relaunching, as certain older graphics drivers have known conflicts with browser-based rendering.

4. Close Conflicting Extensions and Memory-Heavy Tabs Claude's dynamic UI is sensitive to memory throttling. If your computer is low on RAM, the browser will deprioritize the active WebSocket connection.

  1. Open your browser's built-in task manager (press Shift+Esc in Chrome or Edge).
  2. Sort by memory usage and close tabs that are consuming excessive resources.
  3. Disable extensions that actively scan webpage text, such as grammar checkers (e.g., Grammarly), translation tools, or screen readers, as they constantly parse the incoming streaming text from Claude and cause severe lag.

When to Escalate If Claude remains laggy across multiple clean, short chat threads and on different networks, check status.anthropic.com to see if the platform is experiencing "degraded performance" or "increased API latency." If the status is green but the lag persists exclusively on your account, navigate to the billing page to verify your account has not been throttled for rate limit consumption, or contact support to report a potential performance regression on your server cluster.
