Fix: Claude Phone Number Already in Use Error
Updated 9/8/2026
Anthropic enforces strict phone number verification during account registration to mitigate spam, prevent bot signups, and control resource abuse. If you encounter the error message "Phone number already in use" when attempting to verify your account, it means your cellular number is already linked to an existing active or deactivated Claude account. This guide explains why this happens and provides actionable steps to resolve the issue.
Why Anthropic Rejects the Phone Number Each unique phone number can only be associated with one Claude account at a time. This error occurs under four common conditions: * You previously created an account using a different login method (e.g., logging in via Google SSO instead of entering your email address, or vice versa). * You deactivated or deleted a previous Claude account, but the system still reserves the phone number in its database to prevent abuse. * You are using a recycled or newly acquired phone number that belonged to a previous Claude user. * You are attempting to verify using a virtual, VoIP, or temporary burner phone number, which Anthropic's security filters flag and block under the same error category.
How to Resolve the Verification Error
Follow these troubleshooting steps to unlock your number or regain access to your original account.
Step 1: Audit Your Previous Login Methods Most users encounter this error because they accidentally created a duplicate account. You must locate the original account tied to your phone number. 1. Log out of the current account you are trying to set up. 2. Go to the Claude login screen. 3. Try signing in with every email address you own, utilizing both the **Continue with Google** option and the standard email login flow. 4. Once logged into the older account, check if your phone number is verified there. If you wish to use this account instead, you can keep using it without registering a new one.
Step 2: Ensure You Are Not Using a VoIP Number Anthropic's registration system uses Twilio and similar carriers to check the risk profile of your number. Virtual numbers (such as Google Voice, Skype, Zoom Phone, or prepaid burner apps) are automatically rejected. * Ensure the phone number you are entering is a valid, postpaid or prepaid mobile line from a major cellular carrier. * Landlines and internet-based numbers will fail verification and may prompt the "already in use" or "invalid number" error.
Step 3: Request Number Release via Support If you cannot access the original account linked to your phone number (for example, if the associated email address was deleted or belongs to an old employer), you must request that Anthropic's security team manually release the phone number. 1. Open a web browser and visit the Anthropic Support Center. 2. Click the chat icon in the bottom right corner of the page. 3. Select **Account Access & Login Issues**. 4. Choose **Phone Verification Issues** -> **Phone Number Already in Use**. 5. Fill out the form with your current email, the phone number (including country code), and explain that you no longer have access to the old email associated with that phone number. You may be asked to provide proof of phone ownership (such as a phone bill showing your name and number).
When to Escalate If you have submitted a support ticket to release your phone number and have not received a reply within 5 business days, do not submit multiple duplicate tickets, as this will push your request back down the queue. If you are a business user or require immediate access for work, you may need to use an alternative, verified physical phone line belonging to a trusted team member or family member to complete the registration process in the interim.
