Claude Pro Not Active After Payment: Troubleshooting Guide
Updated 9/3/2026
Why Claude Pro Isn't Showing Active After Payment
If you successfully upgraded to Claude Pro, received a payment confirmation or receipt from Stripe, but your account still shows the "Upgrade to Pro" badge or enforces free-tier message limits, you are experiencing a subscription synchronization failure.
This discrepancy usually occurs for three reasons: a local browser session that has failed to pull updated account permissions from the server, a billing webhook delay between Stripe and Anthropic's database, or an account mismatch where the payment was applied to a different login profile. Use the following steps to force your subscription status to sync.
Step 1: Force a Session Refresh and Log Out
Your browser stores your account's tier permissions in local session data. If you paid in one tab while another tab was open, the existing session will not automatically update its access token.
- Click on your profile icon in the lower-left corner of the Claude web application.
- Click Log Out.
- Completely close all active browser tabs and windows running Claude.
- Open a new browser window, navigate to claude.ai/login, and sign back in.
- Check if the "Claude Pro" indicator is now active in your dashboard.
Step 2: Verify Your Payment Status and Email
It is common to accidentally register under one email address and complete the payment on another, especially if your browser's auto-fill entered an alternative email during checkout.
- Locate your payment confirmation email or invoice receipt sent by Stripe (the sender is usually billing+statements@anthropic.com or Stripe).
- Look closely at the Recipient Email on the invoice or receipt. This is the exact email address tied to your Claude Pro license.
- Verify that this email matches the email you are using to sign in. If you signed in via Google SSO using user@gmail.com but the payment went to user@company.com, your Pro features will not be visible on the Google account.
- If there is a mismatch, log out of Claude and log in using the exact email address shown on your payment receipt.
Step 3: Clear Browser Site Data for Claude
If your session token remains stuck on the free tier despite using the correct email, clear your browser's application storage to pull fresh access configurations.
- On the Claude interface, press F12 (Windows) or Cmd + Option + I (Mac) to open Developer Tools.
- Navigate to the Application tab (Chrome/Edge) or Storage tab (Firefox).
- In the left-hand sidebar, expand Local Storage and select https://claude.ai.
- Click the Clear All or trash icon.
- Expand Cookies in the same menu, right-click https://claude.ai, and select Clear.
- Refresh the page and complete the login process.
Step 4: Check for Payment Failures or Retractions
Sometimes, a payment initially appears successful, but the card-issuing bank blocks or reverses the transaction immediately after due to international processing security filters.
- Log in to your online banking portal and check the transaction status for the Claude subscription fee.
- If the charge appears as "Reversed," "Failed," or is missing entirely, your bank blocked the transaction.
- If this occurs, contact your card issuer to whitelist payments to Anthropic and attempt the upgrade process again inside your billing settings.
When to escalate
If your bank statement shows a settled charge, your invoice email matches your current login address, and clearing your session storage fails to unlock Pro features, the billing webhook between Stripe and Claude has failed. Contact Anthropic Support. When filing your ticket, attach a copy of your Stripe invoice (containing the invoice ID starting with in_) and a screenshot of your bank statement showing the completed transaction. This allows support staff to manually force-sync your subscription database entry.
