How to Fix Claude Project Context Limit Reached
Updated 9/8/2026
If you are using Claude Projects (available to Pro and Team users), you may eventually see an error stating you have reached the project's context limit, or notice that Claude is starting to ignore older files and instructions. Claude has a maximum context window of 200,000 tokens. In a Project, this entire window is shared between your custom instructions, uploaded files, and the active chat history.
When this limit is exceeded, Claude cannot process new inputs without dropping older information, or it may refuse to respond altogether. Follow these steps to optimize and clear your Claude Project context.
1. Audit and Prune Uploaded Project Files Project files are sent with every single prompt you submit within that project. If you have uploaded large documents, they are permanently consuming a massive portion of your 200,000-token budget.
- Remove Unused Files: Click on the project settings, view your uploaded files, and delete any reference documents, old code files, or data sheets you are no longer actively referencing.
- Convert File Formats: PDFs, Word documents, and CSV files often contain hidden metadata or formatting structures that inflate their token count. Convert these files to plain text (.txt) or Markdown (.md) before re-uploading them.
- Extract Only What is Necessary: Instead of uploading a 100-page manual, copy and paste only the specific sections (e.g., 2 or 3 relevant pages) into a single, smaller text file and upload that instead.
2. Start a New Chat Thread Within the Project Because Claude must read the entire chat history of your active thread with every new message, long conversations quickly consume your context limit. A thread with dozens of back-and-forth messages can easily use up the entire token allocation, even without uploaded files.
- Keep Chats Single-Topic: Do not run a single chat thread for days. Once a specific task is resolved, start a new chat within the same project.
- Reference Project Files: Starting a new chat does not delete your uploaded Project files or Custom Instructions. Claude will still have access to them in the fresh thread, but your token usage will drop back to baseline.
3. Streamline Project Instructions Your project's "Custom Instructions" acts as a permanent prefix to every prompt. If this section is overly wordy, it drains your token pool.
- Be Concise: Edit your custom instructions to use bullet points instead of long paragraphs.
- Remove Redundant Commands: Delete any instructions that Claude already follows by default (such as "be polite" or "explain steps clearly") and focus only on critical style rules, formatting templates, or coding standards.
4. Split Into Multiple Projects If you are working on a massive enterprise application, a book, or a complex research paper, trying to fit everything into a single Claude Project will trigger context limits.
- Segment by Module: Create separate Projects for distinct phases of your work. For example, instead of a project called "My Startup Website," create "Website Frontend" and "Website Backend."
- Migrate Core Assets: Only carry over the highly relevant structural files to the new sub-project, leaving older drafts and raw logs behind.
When to Escalate If you have deleted all uploaded files, started a fresh chat thread, and still receive a context limit error, or if your Project's file indicator shows 100% capacity despite being empty, you may be experiencing a browser caching error or a platform bug. Log out of your account, clear your browser's application cache and local storage, and log back in. If the error persists, contact Anthropic Support via their help center.
