How to Stop Claude Repeating Answers in a Loop
Updated 9/3/2026
Sometimes Claude gets trapped in an output loop. This behavior manifests in a few ways: repeating the exact same sentence or code block over and over within a single response, generating identical answers across multiple consecutive turns, or outputting a continuous stream of gibberish characters.
This behavior is usually tied to a phenomenon called "attention sink" or a feedback loop in the context window. Once Claude outputs a repetitive sequence, that sequence becomes part of its immediate chat history. Because transformer models predict the next token based on past tokens, the model's self-attention mechanism becomes hyper-focused on the repetition, making it highly likely to repeat the pattern again. Here is how to break the cycle and restore normal model behavior.
Step 1: Start a Completely New Conversation Because Claude analyzes the entire visible chat history to generate its next response, a loop that has occurred once is highly likely to occur again in the same thread. The quickest fix is to clear the model's short-term memory. 1. **Save your work:** Copy any valuable code, outlines, or text generated earlier in the thread. 2. **Start a new chat:** Click the "Star a new chat" button or the Claude icon to open a completely fresh, empty workspace. 3. **Paste clean prompts:** Re-introduce your instructions without pasting the repetitive outputs from the previous bugged session.
Step 2: Edit the Prompt to Introduce High Temperature or Variation If the loop is happening because of how the prompt is structured, you need to force the model to explore different token paths. 1. **Modify the system instructions:** If you are using the API or Claude Projects, explicitly instruct the model to avoid repetition. For example: "Do not repeat previous code blocks. If a step is completed, move on to the next unique step." 2. **Adjust Temperature (API only):** If you are using the Claude API, increase the `temperature` parameter (up toward `1.0`). A higher temperature increases randomness, forcing the model away from repetitive, predictable token paths.
Step 3: Use Negative Constraints in the Chat If you want to keep working in the same chat thread, you must explicitly command Claude to break the loop by calling out the behavior. 1. **Identify the exact repetition:** Note the specific phrase, code block, or concept that Claude is repeating. 2. **Issue a corrective prompt:** Write a highly commanding instruction. For example: "You are repeating the same block of CSS. Do not output that CSS block again. Instead, write only the JavaScript logic for the event listener." 3. **Enforce formatting changes:** Ask Claude to output its answer in a completely different format (e.g., a bulleted list instead of a paragraph, or a different programming language style) to break the cognitive pattern.
Step 4: Clear Browser Cache and Local Storage Occasionally, rendering bugs in the Web UI can make it look like Claude is looping when, in reality, the browser's local state is failing to render the stream correctly. 1. **Hard refresh the tab:** Press `Ctrl + F5` (Windows) or `Cmd + Shift + R` (Mac). 2. **Clear browser data:** Go to your browser settings, clear cached images and files, and clear cookies specifically for `claude.ai`. 3. **Relog:** Log back into your account and test the response generation again.
When to escalate If Claude continues to loop even in brand-new threads across different browsers, or if it outputs repeating, non-sensical strings of characters (like "the the the the" or raw JSON brackets), this indicates an active backend outage or a corrupted model weights issue on Anthropic's servers. Check the official Anthropic status page. If no incident is reported, report the bug directly via the feedback button within the chat interface.
