Fix Claude Repeating the Same Response | Troubleshooting

Updated 9/14/2026

Why Does Claude Get Stuck in a Repetition Loop?

Repetition loops occur when Claude gets trapped in a deterministic pattern. This behavior is usually triggered by a conflict in your prompt constraints, a formatting error in the chat history, or a feedback loop where Claude attempts to correct its own mistake but repeatedly generates the same incorrect code or text.

Because autoregressive language models predict the next token based on all preceding text, if a repetitive pattern is allowed to enter the chat history, the probability of Claude continuing that repetition increases with every turn. To break this loop, you must disrupt the context window.

5 Steps to Break Claude's Repetition Loops

1. Reset the Conversation Context Once a model has repeated itself two or three times, it is highly unlikely to break the pattern on its own because the repetitive text dominates its active memory.

  • For Web Users: Click the "Start a new chat" button. Copy only the essential parts of your previous prompt and paste them into the fresh window.
  • For API Users: Purge the message history list in your request body. Start a fresh API call payload containing only the system instructions and the current user query, leaving out the immediate past messages where the repetition occurred.

2. Remove "Negative Constraints" from Your Prompt Ironically, telling Claude *not* to do something often causes it to focus on that exact concept, leading to formatting loops and repetitive refusals.

  • Avoid these phrases: "Do not use markdown," "Do not mention X," or "Do not repeat yourself."
  • Use positive alternatives: Instead of "Do not use markdown," use "Write your answer as plain, unformatted paragraph text." Instead of "Do not repeat yourself," use "Provide a completely unique perspective that is different from your previous answer."

3. Use Prefilling to Force a New Direction (API Only) If you are using the API, you can control the start of Claude's assistant response. This is the most reliable way to steer the model out of a repetitive loop.

  • Inject an active, non-repetitive start into the assistant message. For example, if Claude keeps repeating an introductory disclaimer, prefill the assistant response with the actual start of the data you want: [{"role": "assistant", "content": "Here is the clean JSON object containing the data: {"}].
  • This forces Claude to continue from your open bracket, bypassing its default repetitive intro text.

4. Adjust the Generation Temperature If your API settings are configured with a Temperature of `0` (completely deterministic), Claude will repeatedly choose the exact same tokens, making loops highly likely if it encounters a logical roadblock.

  • Increase the Temperature: Raise your temperature setting to 0.5 or 0.7. This adds randomness to the token selection process and encourages the model to choose alternative phrasing, which usually breaks the loop.
  • Note: Do not raise the temperature above 1.0 for structured tasks, as this can cause hallucinated or chaotic outputs.

5. Format Code and Data Requests Explicitly Repetition loops often occur when Claude tries to output complex structures (like JSON, YAML, or nested code blocks) but fails to close a tag or bracket, causing it to generate the same structure again and again.

  • Provide Claude with a clear, empty template of the expected output.
  • Example prompt modification: *"Generate the user data. Follow this exact schema and do not include any text before or after the JSON block: { \"name\": \"\", \"email\": \"\" }"*

When to Escalate

If Claude continues to loop even within brand new, highly basic chat sessions (such as repeating a single word indefinitely across unrelated topics), the issue is likely a service-side deployment bug or a corrupted cache in your web browser.

  • Test in Incognito Mode: Open a private browsing tab and try the prompt again. If the loop stops, clear your primary browser's cache and cookies.
  • Report to Anthropic: If the issue persists across different browsers and accounts, go to the Anthropic developer platform or the Claude.ai dashboard, click the help/support icon, and submit a bug report titled "Model Repetition Loop" along with a shareable link to the affected chat thread.
