Status & outages
Claude Status is Green But Web App Not Working?
Updated 9/4/2026
It is frustrating when you experience severe lag, network errors, or failed responses on Claude, yet the official Anthropic status page claims everything is green and fully operational. This discrepancy happens because official status pages rely on automated ping tests and aggregated metrics, which often delay reporting localized regional outages, CDN routing failures, or gradual performance degradation.
Follow this diagnostic checklist to find out where the bottleneck is and bypass it.
1. Verify Third-Party Real-Time Outage Monitors Before spending time changing your local setup, confirm if other users are experiencing the same issue. Official status pages can take 15 to 45 minutes to reflect an outage.
- Visit independent tracking platforms like Downdetector and search for "Anthropic" or "Claude".
- Check community spaces like Reddit (e.g., r/ClaudeAI) or X (formerly Twitter) using the hashtag #ClaudeDown or searching "Claude".
- Look for a sudden spike in reports within the last 10 minutes. If you see hundreds of users complaining of the same issue, the network is degraded regardless of what the official status page says.
2. Check for Local DNS and Routing Failures Sometimes your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has stale DNS records pointing to an inactive or overloaded Claude edge server.
- Open your computer's terminal or command prompt.
- Run a ping test to see if you can reach the server: ping claude.ai (on Windows) or ping -c 4 claude.ai (on macOS/Linux).
- If you see high packet loss or extremely high latency (over 300ms), change your DNS settings to a fast, public resolver.
- Google DNS: Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4
- Cloudflare DNS: Primary 1.1.1.1, Secondary 1.0.0.1
- Flush your system DNS cache:
- *Windows:* Open CMD as Admin and type ipconfig /flushdns.
- *macOS:* Open Terminal and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
3. Disable Interfering Browser Extensions Browser extensions—especially ad-blockers, script-blockers, privacy protectors, or translation tools—can block the WebSockets or API queries Claude uses to stream responses dynamically.
- Open a private/incognito window in your browser.
- Navigate to claude.ai and sign in.
- Test the model's responsiveness. If it works perfectly, one of your active extensions is blocking the connection.
- Go to your browser's extension manager and disable extensions one by one (focusing on ad-blockers like uBlock Origin or automated page translators) until you identify the culprit. Add claude.ai to that extension's whitelist.
4. Reset Local storage and Active Web Workers Sometimes, modern web apps get stuck in a bad local state due to interrupted service worker registrations, which run in the background of your browser.
- In Chrome or Edge, press F12 to open Developer Tools.
- Navigate to the Application tab (or Storage tab in Firefox).
- In the left sidebar, click on Storage.
- Click the Clear site data button, which clears local storage, session storage, databases, and unregisters any active service workers for Claude.
- Refresh the browser and log in again.
5. Force a Routing Change via a Mobile Hotspot If your local network's router configuration or ISP routing paths are congested, switching to a completely different network route will bypass the block.
- Disconnect your computer from your primary Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- Enable the Personal Hotspot feature on your mobile phone.
- Connect your computer to your phone’s cellular data network.
- Reload Claude. If it works instantly, your local ISP or router firewall is throttling or misrouting connections to Anthropic's endpoints.
When to escalate If third-party platforms show zero user complaints, you've flushed your DNS, verified that Claude works on a mobile hotspot, and cleared your browser’s service workers, but the web interface still won't load, the problem could be an issue with your specific user account database shard. Contact Anthropic Support through the in-app help widget, providing your account email, your physical location/IP address, and console log screenshots (press `F12` and click the **Console** tab to capture errors).
