How to Fix Claude Stopping Mid-Sentence or Cutting Off

Updated 8/16/2026

It is frustrating when Claude stops generating text or code in the middle of a sentence, leaving you with a partial response. This behavior is rarely a random bug; it is typically caused by model output limits, browser rendering timeouts, or network interruptions.

This troubleshooting guide explains why Claude cuts off its answers and provides step-by-step instructions to force the model to resume and prevent the issue from happening again.

Why Claude Stops Generating Mid-Sentence

There are three primary reasons why Claude might stop writing before completing its response:

  1. Output Token Limits: Claude has a strict maximum output limit per individual message (typically 4,096 or 8,092 tokens, depending on the model version). If you ask for a very long script or an extensive essay, the model will stop generating as soon as it hits this cap.
  2. Browser Memory Exhaustion: Large chat threads containing extensive code blocks put a heavy strain on your browser’s rendering engine. If your browser runs out of memory, it may freeze or stop displaying the rest of Claude's response.
  3. Network Micro-Disconnects: If your internet connection drops for even a fraction of a second while Claude is streaming its answer, the connection to the server can break, causing the generation to halt immediately.

How to Fix Truncated Claude Responses

1. Prompt Claude to Resume Correctly Do not simply type "continue" when Claude cuts off. This often causes the model to start writing from the beginning of the entire prompt, or lose track of where it was. Instead, use a specific resume prompt.

  • For code: Type: "You cut off at [insert last line of code]. Please resume generating the code from that exact line. Do not rewrite what you have already written."
  • For text: Type: "You stopped mid-sentence at '[insert last 5-10 words]'. Please continue writing from that exact point."

2. Chunk Your Prompts into Smaller Requests If you regularly hit the token limit, adjust how you structure your requests. Instead of asking Claude to build an entire application or write a 3,000-word article in a single prompt, break it down into modular steps.

  • Bad: "Write a complete web application with frontend, backend, and database integration."
  • Good: "Step 1: Write only the database schema for this application. Stop when finished." Once Claude responds, prompt: "Step 2: Now write the backend connection logic for that schema."

3. Clear Browser Cache and Reduce Tab Memory If the generation cuts off and your browser tab becomes sluggish or unresponsive, the issue is local rendering performance.

  • Close unnecessary browser tabs to free up RAM.
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies, then reload the Claude.ai tab.
  • If you are in a very long chat thread, start a new chat. Large threads overload the browser DOM and cause rendering timeouts.

4. Adjust the Output Format to Plain Text Rich markdown elements, nested bullet points, and syntax-highlighted code blocks require more processing power to render. If Claude frequently stalls on formatting, ask it to output in a simpler format.

  • Add this instruction to your prompt: "Output your response in plain text without markdown formatting or code blocks where possible." This reduces the rendering overhead and helps prevent freezes.

When to Escalate

If Claude consistently stops generating after just one or two paragraphs, or if the page completely crashes with a specific error code (like "Aw, Snap!"), the issue is likely on the server side or related to your browser configuration. Check the Anthropic Status page (status.anthropic.com) to see if there is an active incident causing degraded performance. If the status is operational, try accessing Claude via an incognito window or a different browser (such as switching from Chrome to Firefox) to isolate local extension conflicts.
