How to Fix Claude Stuck in a Repeating Loop

Updated 8/17/2026

Occasionally, when using Claude on the web interface or via the API, the model can become trapped in an infinite generation loop. It may repeat the exact same sentence, block of code, or phrase over and over until it hits its token generation limit.

This behavior is a common failure mode in autoregressive language models. Once a phrase is generated once or twice, it enters the conversation's "context window." Because the model predicts future text based on past text, the repeated phrase becomes highly weighted, making the model generate it again, creating a feedback loop.

Here is how to break the cycle and restore normal operation.

---

Why Claude Gets Stuck in Loops

  • Repetitive Prompt Design: If your prompt contains repetitive phrasing or circular logic, the model may mimic that pattern in its output.
  • Zero Temperature Settings (API): While a temperature of 0.0 is great for factual accuracy, it can sometimes cause the model to get trapped in a local minimum where the identical token path is taken repeatedly.
  • Inconsistent System Instructions: Contradictory instructions in system prompts can confuse the model, causing it to bounce back and forth between two rules, repeating the same output cycle.
  • Context Window Corruption: A temporary corruption in the browser session or API payload can cause the backend to feed the model its own previous output repeatedly.

How to Break Claude Out of a Repetition Loop

1. Start a New Chat Session Once a loop starts in a Claude.ai chat window, it is highly difficult to prompt the model out of it within that same conversation because the loop is already part of the active history. * **Action:** Click "Star New Chat" in the top-left corner of Claude.ai. This wipes the immediate conversational context and forces the model to construct a fresh prediction path.

2. Edit the Prompt That Triggered the Loop If you do not want to lose your current chat history, you can edit the prompt that directly preceded the repetition loop to force a different generation path. * **Action:** Hover over your last prompt, click the **Edit** (pencil) icon, modify the wording slightly, and click **Save & Submit**. This truncates the chat history right before the loop started, preventing the model from reading the repeated text.

3. Adjust API Parameters (For Developers) If you are using the Anthropic API and experiencing repetitive loops in your application, adjust your request payload parameters. * **Action 1: Increase Temperature.** If your temperature is set to `0`, raise it slightly to `0.2` or `0.3`. This adds a small amount of entropy to token prediction, which is usually enough to break local repetition patterns. * **Action 2: Implement Stop Sequences.** Use the `stop_sequences` API parameter to tell the model to cease generation immediately if it outputs a specific repeating delimiter or phrase.

4. Provide a Negative Constraint in the Prompt If you must run a prompt that has historically caused loops, explicitly forbid repetition within the prompt instructions. * **Action:** Add this block to your instruction set: > "CRITICAL: Avoid repetitive language, circular phrasing, or repeating the same code blocks. Ensure every paragraph introduces new information. Do not repeat previous sentences."

5. Clear Browser Cache and Hard Refresh Sometimes the loop is not a model error, but a local browser rendering bug where the web page fails to properly parse the incoming stream of tokens, displaying the same line repeatedly. * **Action:** Perform a hard refresh on your browser: * **Windows/Linux:** Press `Ctrl` + `F5` or `Ctrl` + Shift + `R`. * **Mac:** Press `Cmd` + `Shift` + `R`. * If the issue persists, clear your browser's cookies and cached site data for `claude.ai`.

How to Prevent Future Loops

To keep Claude from falling back into repetitive generation patterns, follow these prompt structure principles: * Define Output Structure: Give Claude a strict structure to fill out (e.g., "Provide your answer in exactly three bullet points, formatted as follows..."). When the model has a structural roadmap, it is far less likely to wander into circular generation. * Avoid Redundant Instructions: Do not repeat the same instruction multiple times in different ways within your prompt. This over-weighting confuses the attention heads of the model.

When to Escalate

If Claude gets stuck in repeating loops across entirely new chat sessions, different browsers, and across different model versions (e.g., switching from Claude 3.5 Sonnet to Claude 3 Opus), there may be a platform-wide issue with Anthropic's text-streaming infrastructure.

Check for system latency or service outages on the Anthropic Status page. If the issue is persistent and happening with simple, standard prompts, report the bug through the support widget in the bottom-right corner of the Claude.ai interface.
