Claude Stuck in a Repetitive Loop? How to Fix It
Updated 9/23/2026
Large language models can occasionally get caught in an infinite generation loop. This occurs when Claude repeatedly outputs the exact same paragraph, code block, or sentence structure over and over again, consuming your message limits without providing useful answers. This behavior is typically caused by context-window pollution, repetitive prompting patterns, or API temperature settings.
Use these step-by-step methods to break the repetition loop and get Claude back on track.
Step 1: Start a Fresh Conversation
Once a loop starts, it becomes part of the active chat history. Because Claude uses previous messages to predict the next word, it is highly likely to repeat its own repetitive behavior if you continue typing in the same thread.
- Click the New Chat button in the top-left corner of the Claude interface to clear the active memory.
- Do not copy and paste the entire previous prompt directly. Instead, rephrase your opening question to ensure Claude does not re-enter the same pattern.
- If you must use the same context, upload your source text as a clean document file (e.g., a .txt or .pdf file) rather than pasting a massive block of text directly into the chat box.
Step 2: Inject Hard Negative Constraints
If Claude begins repeating code structures or specific phrases within a single conversation, you can break the loop by telling the model explicitly what *not* to do in your next prompt.
- Use a clear, direct instruction at the very beginning of your reply: *"You are repeating the same block of code. Stop doing this. Do not output the previous helper function. Only output the new modifications."*
- If you are generating a list, write: *"Provide the next five items. Do not repeat any of the items mentioned in the previous turns."*
- Use markdown formatting to isolate your corrections, making it easier for Claude's attention mechanism to process the instruction.
Step 3: Adjust API Parameters (For API Users)
If you are accessing Claude via the Anthropic API, Google Vertex AI, or AWS Bedrock, loops are often caused by low temperature settings or repeating patterns in your system prompt.
- Increase the Temperature: A temperature set too low (e.g., 0.0 or 0.1) makes Claude's responses highly deterministic, which can lock the model into a repetition loop. Increase the temperature value to 0.5 or 0.7 to introduce more randomness.
- Check the Presence Penalty: If your platform supports it, adjust the frequency or presence penalty parameters upward to discourage the model from reusing identical word tokens.
- Review System Prompts: Ensure your system prompts do not contain conflicting instructions that confuse the model, such as demanding both a "highly detailed explanation" and a "strict 50-word summary" at the same time.
Step 4: Clear Browser Local Storage
In rare cases, frontend caching issues on claude.ai can cause the browser to repeatedly display a cached chunk of text, making it appear as though the model is looping when the backend has actually finished generating.
- Open your browser's Developer Tools (F12 on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Option+I on Mac).
- Navigate to the Application or Storage tab.
- Select Clear Site Data or manually clear local storage and session storage for claude.ai.
- Refresh the page and try your prompt again.
When to escalate
If Claude continues to generate repetitive loops across completely new chat windows, with different prompts, and on multiple devices, the issue is likely a model-side regression or an active backend bug. Check the Anthropic Status page (status.anthropic.com) to see if there is an active incident report regarding model degradation. If the status is operational, report the bug directly using the feedback thumbs-down icon on the looped response to alert the Anthropic engineering team.
