How to Fix Claude Writing Broken Code

Updated 9/16/2026

When Claude begins generating broken, buggy, or non-functional code, it can disrupt your development workflow. This behavior usually stems from outdated training data (such as deprecated library APIs), context drift in long chat threads, or ambiguous instructions that force the model to fill in details with assumptions.

Because Claude cannot run your code to verify its execution, you must use specific structural techniques to ensure the output is syntactically correct and logical. Follow these structured steps to fix Claude’s coding outputs.

1. Specify Exact Library and Language Versions Claude’s training data has a knowledge cutoff, meaning it may default to older syntax or deprecated libraries if you do not specify your environment.

1. Begin your prompt by defining the exact runtime environment (e.g., Node.js v20, Python 3.11, React 18). 2. Specify the exact versions of critical libraries you are using (e.g., "Use Next.js App Router, not Page Router"). 3. If you are using a very recent library version released after Claude's cutoff, paste the relevant API documentation directly into the chat using XML tags, like this: `xml <library_docs> [Paste documentation here] </library_docs> `

2. Enforce Strict Output Rules with System Prompts If Claude is writing incomplete code (e.g., using placeholders like `// TODO: implement helper function`), you must explicitly forbid placeholders in your system instructions or initial prompt.

  1. Add a direct constraint to your prompt: "Do not use placeholders, shorthand, or leave any part of the implementation as an exercise for the reader."
  2. Ask Claude to write the entire file from start to finish: "Provide the complete, production-ready code for [filename]."
  3. If the code is too long, instruct Claude to break it down into modular, fully implemented files instead of one truncated file.

3. Use the "Chain of Thought" Prompting Method Claude performs significantly better at logical tasks when it is forced to plan its architecture before writing the actual code. This prevents logical errors and broken loops.

  1. Modify your prompt to require a planning phase first.
  2. Use this phrasing: "Before writing any code, analyze the requirements, list the edge cases you need to handle, and outline the architecture in a markdown block."
  3. Let Claude output the plan first, or have it output both in a single response. This mental runway allows the model to align its attention mechanism with the correct programming logic.

4. Feed Error Logs and Tracebacks Back to Claude When Claude outputs code that throws an error, do not simply say "it doesn't work." Provide the exact context of the failure.

1. Copy the complete terminal error message, stack trace, or compiler error. 2. Paste it into Claude using code blocks or XML tags: `text I ran your code and got this error: [Paste error here] ` 3. Instruct Claude: "Identify the root cause of this error in your previous code, explain why it occurred, and output the corrected code."

5. Reset Context in a New Chat Session As a chat session grows longer, Claude’s performance degrades. The "context window" fills up with previous iterations of broken code, and the model may continuously repeat its past mistakes.

  1. Copy the working parts of your code and your current system requirements.
  2. Open a completely fresh chat window.
  3. Paste the clean, working base code and state: "This is my current working code. Do not modify this structure, but help me implement the next feature: [feature instructions]."

When to escalate If Claude consistently generates broken code even in a fresh chat with precise documentation, check the Anthropic Status page to see if there is an active API or model degradation. If you are using Claude via a third-party IDE extension (like Cursor, Continue, or VS Code plugins), check the extension's settings to verify your API key is active and that the extension is calling the correct model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet rather than a legacy model).
