Can You Reuse a Phone Number on a New Claude Account?
Updated 9/2/2026
Why Anthropic Restricts Phone Number Reuse
To prevent platform abuse, spam, and bulk automated sign-ups, Anthropic enforces a strict policy of one phone number per Claude account. When you complete the SMS verification step during registration, your phone number is cryptographically linked to your specific account ID.
If you decide to delete your account or if you lose access to the email linked to your account, you cannot immediately register a new profile using that same phone number. Even after account deletion, the system retains records of previously verified phone numbers to block users from bypassing safety limitations or recycling numbers.
How to Resolve Phone Verification Conflicts
If you are locked out of creating a new Claude account because your phone number is tied to an old or deleted account, use the following steps to address the conflict.
1. Check If Your Old Account Is Still Recoverable If you deleted your account very recently, or if you simply abandoned it but did not officially complete the deletion queue (which takes up to 30 days to fully purge backend data), the number is still locked to that active profile.
- Attempt to log into claude.ai using your original email address.
- If you used Google or Apple SSO, sign in using those identity providers.
- If you can log in, continue using this account rather than creating a new one. This preserves your verified status and prevents you from losing access to the platform.
2. Use a Standard Mobile Number (No VOIP) If you are trying to register a new account because your original one is completely gone, and you attempt to use a secondary virtual phone number, Claude will reject it.
- Ensure the phone number you are registering is a legitimate, post-paid or pre-paid mobile phone number from a recognized cellular carrier.
- Do not use Voice over IP (VoIP) services like Google Voice, Skype, TextNow, or virtual SIM providers. Claude's registration system automatically flags and blocks these numbers due to high abuse rates.
- Landline numbers are also unsupported as they cannot receive the automated SMS verification code.
3. Contact Support Before Deleting Your Current Profile If you are planning to change your login email address and want to keep your current phone number, **do not delete your account first**. Deleting it yourself will trap the phone number in the system's security cooldown log.
- While still logged into your active Claude account, open the support chat widget in the bottom-right corner.
- Request an Email Update rather than an account deletion.
- Support staff can manually transition your existing, verified account to your new email address, retaining your billing history, conversation history, and verified phone number.
When to Escalate
If you previously deleted your account and have waited more than 30 days, but you still receive a "This phone number is already in use" or "Verification failed" error when registering, you will need manual intervention.
Contact Anthropic's support team by emailing support@anthropic.com. In your message, specify: - The phone number you are trying to register (including country code). - The email address associated with your deleted account. - The email address you want to use for your new account.
Note that for security reasons, Anthropic may require proof of ownership of the phone number (such as a recent phone bill displaying your name and number) before they can disassociate it from the legacy database.
