How to Check Anthropic API Status & Outages
Updated 8/17/2026
When developing applications or workflows integrated with Claude, sudden errors like 500 Internal Server Error, 503 Service Unavailable, or persistent network timeouts can disrupt your service. To determine whether the failure is a local code/network bug or an external Anthropic infrastructure outage, you must systematically check their systems.
Here is how to monitor the live status of the Anthropic API, read incident reports, and verify endpoint connectivity manually.
Step 1: Visit the Official Anthropic Status Page
Anthropic hosts a public status board that displays live operational health across all their key services. This is the first place you should check during an unexpected outage.
- Open your web browser and go to https://status.anthropic.com.
- Review the overall system status indicator at the top of the page.
- Look at the operational status of the specific components:
- API: The core endpoint (api.anthropic.com) used for developer integration.
- Claude.ai: The web-based consumer chat application interface.
- Console: The developer dashboard used to manage API keys and billing.
- Scroll down to review the Past Incidents log. Even if the current status says "Operational," a major incident may have occurred within the last few hours that explains temporary request drops in your app logs.
Step 2: Subscribe to Live Incident Notifications
If you run production workloads that rely on Claude, you should configure automatic alerts to notify your engineering team immediately when an outage begins.
- Go to status.anthropic.com.
- Click the Subscribe to Updates button in the top right corner.
- Select your preferred communication method:
- Email: Get message logs on incident creation, update, and resolution.
- Slack: Send real-time outage alerts directly to your development team's channel.
- Atom/RSS Feed: Integrate the status feed into your internal monitoring dashboards (e.g., Datadog, PagerDuty, or custom Slack bots).
Step 3: Run a Diagnostic Check via Command Line
If the status page indicates all systems are green but your application is failing to receive a response, run a clean curl test directly from your server to check the routing paths and resolve any API key issues.
Open your terminal and run the following command (replace $ANTHROPIC_API_KEY with your actual API key):
`bash curl https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages \ --header "x-api-key: $ANTHROPIC_API_KEY" \ --header "anthropic-version: 2023-06-01" \ --header "content-type: application/json" \ --data '{ "model": "claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022", "max_tokens": 1024, "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello, world"}] }' `
Analyze the Response: * **HTTP 200 OK:** The API is functional. The issue lies within your application's SDK version, code logic, or local timeout parameters. * **HTTP 5xx (500/502/503/504):** The issue is on Anthropic's server or CDN routing layers, even if the status page has not updated yet. * **HTTP 401 Unauthorized:** Your API key is invalid or has been revoked. * **HTTP 429 Too Many Requests:** You have exceeded your rate limits (check your credit balance in the Console).
Step 4: Check Cloudflare Regional Status
Anthropic uses Cloudflare as their Content Delivery Network (CDN) and DDoS protection layer. In rare cases, a Cloudflare edge network node in your specific geographic region might experience issues while the central Anthropic servers remain operational.
- Navigate to https://www.cloudflarestatus.com.
- Review the status of regional network hubs. If Cloudflare is experiencing localized DNS or network routing issues in your region, traffic to api.anthropic.com may fail.
- If a regional node is down, you can temporarily bypass this by routing your developer server traffic through a different region using a proxy or server VPN.
When to escalate
If your local curl tests return a 5xx series error, but the official Anthropic status page shows "All Systems Operational," there may be a delay in their monitoring. Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the automatic systems to flag the issue. If the outage continues for over 15 minutes without any updates on the status page, log in to your Anthropic Console, click the support widget on the bottom right, and submit a ticket containing your exact error logs, timestamp, and server region to alert their engineering team.
