How to Check If the Claude API Is Down (Diagnostics)

When your integration with the Anthropic API suddenly returns errors, timeouts, or empty responses, you need to quickly determine whether the failure lies within your application's code, local network routing, or Anthropic's global API infrastructure.

Before refactoring your application or resetting your environment variables, use these developer-focused diagnostic methods to verify if the Claude API is experiencing a partial or complete outage.

Step 1: Execute a Direct Curl Diagnostic Test SDK wrappers can obscure underlying connection errors, masking network timeouts as local validation failures. Running a raw HTTP request via curl bypasses your local application logic and dependencies.

Open your terminal and run the following diagnostic command (replace $ANTHROPIC_API_KEY with your actual key, or run it without an API key to check the gateway response):

Analyzing the curl Output: * **HTTP 200 OK:** The API is online and functional. The problem lies inside your SDK setup, dependency tree, or application environment. * **HTTP 401 Unauthorized:** The API gateway is functional. Your API key is invalid, improperly formatted, or has been revoked. * **HTTP 429 Too Many Requests:** The API is online, but you have hit your rate limit, or your account has run out of credits. * **HTTP 5xx (500, 502, 503, 529):** Anthropic's API servers are experiencing an outage, overload, or gateway failure. This is a confirmed API-side issue. * **Connection Timeout / Could not resolve host:** Your local server is experiencing DNS resolution failures or egress firewall blocks.

Step 2: Query the Status API Programmatically Anthropic uses a status monitoring service that hosts a public API. If you need to build automated fallbacks into your application (e.g., automatically routing traffic to an alternative provider when Claude is down), query the status endpoint programmatically.

Run this curl request to fetch the raw system status:

Look for the status.indicator key in the JSON payload: * none: All systems are operational. * minor / major / critical: The API is experiencing degraded performance or a complete outage.

Step 3: Run DNS Diagnostics Sometimes, localized DNS routing issues isolate specific servers or regions from reaching the API gateway while the rest of the world remains unaffected. Run a DNS lookup test using `dig` or `nslookup`:

Ensure that the lookup resolves to valid IP addresses and does not return an NXDOMAIN error or time out. If the IP lookup fails, verify if your hosting provider or local ISP is blocking traffic to Anthropic's IP blocks or if there is an ongoing global BGP routing issue.

Step 4: Check Regional Cloud Provider Status If you access Claude through cloud marketplaces or model-as-a-service platforms (such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI), the Anthropic-hosted API status page may show "All Systems Operational" while your cloud-routed instances are down. 1. **AWS Bedrock:** Check the AWS Health Dashboard for issues in your specific region (e.g., `us-east-1` or `us-west-2`). 2. **Google Cloud Vertex AI:** Check the Google Cloud Status Dashboard under the Vertex AI component status.

When to escalate If your direct curl tests return HTTP 5xx errors (specifically `529 Overloaded` or `503 Service Unavailable`) and the official status page at `status.anthropic.com` does not reflect any current incidents, the outage may be in its early stages. Collect your response headers (specifically the `cf-ray` ID and timestamp) and open a support ticket through the developer console. If your business depends on zero-downtime operations, implement a code fallback that catches 5xx errors and redirects requests to a secondary model provider.
