How to Check if Claude Is Down: Official Status & Tools

Updated 9/6/2026

When you cannot connect to Claude, the first priority is determining whether the problem lies with Anthropic's infrastructure or your local network environment. Because Claude's web platform (claude.ai) and its developer API operate on separate but overlapping systems, a failure on one does not always mean the other is offline. This guide walks you through the precise steps required to check the live status of the Claude ecosystem and isolate the root cause.

1. Query the Official Anthropic Status Page The primary source of truth for Claude's availability is the official status page managed by Anthropic.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to status.anthropic.com.
  2. Review the status indicators for the following services:
  3. Claude.ai: The main web-based assistant interface.
  4. API: The developer endpoint (api.anthropic.com) used by third-party integrations and custom applications.
  5. Console: The developer dashboard used for managing API keys and billing.
  6. Check the "Past Incidents" section at the bottom of the page. Anthropic updates this log in real-time when active investigations are underway. If you see a "Degraded Performance" or "Major Outage" notification, the engineering team is already working on a fix, and you must wait for them to resolve it.

2. Check Independent Outage Detectors Official status pages can sometimes experience a delay in updates during the first few minutes of a sudden traffic spike or system crash. To get immediate crowdsourced validation:

  1. Visit third-party monitoring websites like Downdetector or IsItDownRightNow. Search specifically for "Anthropic" or "Claude".
  2. Look at the volume of user-submitted reports over the last 15 to 60 minutes. A sharp, vertical spike in reports indicates a widespread outage.
  3. Check social platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) or Reddit (specifically the r/ClaudeAI subreddit). Use search queries like "Claude down" or "Claude API error" and filter by the latest posts to see if other users are reporting identical issues.

3. Verify via Terminal Diagnostics (Ping and Traceroute) If status portals show all systems are operational, but you still cannot connect, test your local machine's routing to Claude's servers.

  • For Windows users:
  • Open Command Prompt.
  • Type ping api.anthropic.com or ping claude.ai and press Enter.
  • For macOS and Linux users:
  • Open Terminal.
  • Type ping -c 4 claude.ai and press Enter.

Analyze the output: - If the ping requests return "Request timed out" or "Destination host unreachable," your network cannot reach Anthropic's content delivery network (CDN). - If the ping succeeds with low latency but the web interface fails to load, the issue is likely browser-related or isolated to the application layer. - Run a traceroute to see where the packet drop occurs. On Windows, run tracert claude.ai. On Mac/Linux, run traceroute claude.ai. If the connection drops at an IP address belonging to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), the outage is localized to your routing path.

4. Test Alternative Access Points Often, a localized outage only affects one access method. Try these alternatives to verify:

  1. Switch networks: Disable Wi-Fi on your mobile device and attempt to access Claude using cellular data. This bypasses local router configurations, DNS issues, or ISP-specific blocks.
  2. Use the mobile app: If you are struggling with the web interface, open the official Claude app on iOS or Android to see if the session initializes.
  3. Test the API Console: Navigate to console.anthropic.com. If the Console loads but the consumer web interface does not, the web app's frontend server is experiencing localized downtime.

When to escalate If the status page reports "All Systems Operational," and you have completed all local network diagnostic tests but still cannot reach Claude, escalate the issue. Contact Anthropic Support via the "Help" button inside the Console, or submit a request through `support.anthropic.com`. Provide your public IP address, the diagnostic output from your ping/traceroute tests, and any exact error codes displayed on your screen.
