How to Fix Claude Error 500 Internal Server Error

Updated 9/17/2026

An HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error) is a generic server-side error message. It means Anthropic’s web servers encountered an unexpected condition that prevented them from fulfilling your request. While a 500 error typically points to an outage on Anthropic's end, browser state conflicts, corrupt session cookies, or localized CDN failures can also trigger this error on your machine.

Follow these troubleshooting steps to determine if the error is localized and how to bypass it.

1. Verify Anthropic's System Status Before modifying your local settings, confirm whether Anthropic is experiencing a widespread system outage.

  • Navigate to the official status page at status.anthropic.com.
  • Look for outages under the "Claude.ai" component.
  • If the system shows "Degraded Performance," "Partial Outage," or "Major Outage," the 500 error is a server-side problem. In this case, you must wait for Anthropic's infrastructure team to deploy a fix.

2. Perform a Hard Refresh Standard browser reloading often pulls cached resources that are tied to the crashed server state. A hard refresh forces your browser to bypass its cache and fetch a clean version of the webpage directly from Claude's servers.

  • Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  • macOS: Press Cmd + Shift + R or hold down the Shift key and click the browser's Reload icon.

3. Clear Claude.ai Session Cookies and Local Storage Corrupt browser cookies or active session states can trap your browser in a 500-error loop, even after the server has recovered from an outage. Clearing your local site data forces Claude to establish a brand-new, clean session.

  • In Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge:
  • Click the padlock or settings icon to the left of claude.ai in your address bar.
  • Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  • Click Manage on-device site data or Clear data.
  • Remove all listed storage for claude.ai and anthropic.com.
  • Reload the page and log back into your account.
  • In Mozilla Firefox:
  • Click the lock icon in the address bar.
  • Select Clear cookies and site data.
  • Click Remove.

4. Test via Private Browsing Mode Browser extensions (such as ad blockers, script blockers, or translation overlays) can interfere with Claude’s JavaScript assets, triggering false 500 errors.

  • Open a new Incognito or Private Window in your browser.
  • Navigate directly to https://claude.ai and attempt to log in.
  • If the 500 error disappears, the issue is caused by one of your browser extensions. Temporarily disable your active extensions one by one in your main browser window to isolate the culprit.

5. Flush Your DNS Cache If Anthropic recently routed traffic away from a failing server cluster to resolve an outage, your operating system may still be attempting to connect to the offline server IP address.

  • Windows:
  • Open the Start menu, type cmd, and open the Command Prompt as administrator.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
  • macOS:
  • Open the Terminal application.
  • Type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and press Enter.
  • Input your macOS admin password to complete the command.

When to escalate If you have completed all the steps above, confirmed that `status.anthropic.com` displays all systems operational, and still receive a 500 Internal Server Error, the issue may be isolated to your specific user profile database partition. Reach out to Anthropic Support through the widget on their support site (`support.anthropic.com`) or email `support@anthropic.com` with your account email address, a screenshot of the error, and the approximate timestamp of when the issue started.
