Claude Giving Too Short Answers? How to Fix It

Updated 9/16/2026

When Claude starts delivering overly brief, surface-level, or truncated answers, it is usually responding to implicit brevity cues in your prompt, hitting subtle token thresholds, or suffering from context fatigue in a long conversation thread.

To get the deep, comprehensive, and detailed analytical answers Claude is known for, you need to adjust how you structure your queries and manage the conversation context. Follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

1. Explicitly Define Output Length and Depth If you do not specify how deep you want Claude to go, it may default to a conversational, concise tone to save processing tokens. You must explicitly request a highly detailed output.

  1. Avoid vague prompts like "Explain photosynthesis." Instead, specify your desired depth: "Write an exhaustive, academic-level explanation of photosynthesis."
  2. Give Claude a target length or structure: "Provide a minimum of five detailed paragraphs, including subsections for light-dependent and light-independent reactions."
  3. Use explicit instructions to discourage brevity: "Do not summarize or simplify. Include all technical terms, mechanisms, and background context."

2. Structure Your Query with XML Tags Claude is trained to respond systematically to structured documents. If you feed it messy text, it tends to return short, disorganized answers. Organizing your input encourages Claude to match that complexity in its output.

1. Wrap your background information, sources, or reference texts in clear XML tags: `xml <source_material> [Paste your long-form text here] </source_material> ` 2. Below the XML tags, place your detailed instructions: "Analyze the source_material above. Write an in-depth, section-by-section breakdown of the core arguments presented."

3. Use Multi-Step Prompting (Chaining) Asking for a massive, detailed document all at once often causes Claude to hit internal output limits, resulting in a sudden truncation or a rushed, brief conclusion. Instead, break the generation process into steps.

  1. First prompt: "Create a highly detailed outline for a comprehensive guide on [topic]. include 5 main sections and sub-bullets for each."
  2. Second prompt (once the outline is generated): "Now, write Section 1 in full, academic detail. Do not write the other sections yet. Focus on depth and explain every sub-bullet fully."
  3. Continue this step-by-step process for each subsequent section.

4. Check for Hidden Truncation via Max Tokens (API Users) If you are accessing Claude via the Anthropic API, Google Vertex AI, or Amazon Bedrock, your outputs may be getting cut off prematurely due to configuration settings.

  1. Check the max_tokens parameter in your API payload. If this value is set too low (e.g., 256 or 512), Claude will stop generating mid-thought.
  2. Increase max_tokens to its maximum allowable limit (e.g., 4096 or 8192 tokens depending on the model version) to give Claude the headroom it needs for long-form generation.

5. Clear the Chat Cache in a New Thread In long conversational threads, the cumulative token count of the chat history consumes Claude's total context window. When the window is nearly full, Claude may generate extremely brief answers to avoid exceeding its maximum token processing capacity.

  1. Copy any important context or formatting instructions from your current chat.
  2. Open a new chat window to clear the accumulated history.
  3. Paste your prompt into the fresh window. You will immediately notice longer, more thorough responses.

When to escalate If Claude continues to generate unusually short, single-sentence, or empty responses across multiple fresh threads, there may be an underlying service degradation or a system-wide platform issue. Check the Anthropic developer status page. If you are on a Claude Team or Pro account, check if your high-speed usage limits have been temporarily reached, which can sometimes cause the model to default to a faster, less complex generation mode.
