Is Claude Down? How to Check Service Status

Updated 9/7/2026

When Claude stops responding or fails to load, it can be difficult to determine whether the issue lies with Anthropic's servers, your internet service provider (ISP), or your browser cache. System-wide outages can affect the web interface, the API, or developer console independently. Follow this step-by-step diagnostic guide to pinpoint the source of the outage and find a way back online.

1. Check Official and Unofficial Status Trackers

Before changing any local network settings, verify if Anthropic has acknowledged an ongoing incident.

  • Check the Official Status Page: Visit status.anthropic.com. This dashboard tracks the operational status of the Claude Web App, the Claude API, and the Developer Console. Look for "Degraded Performance," "Partial Outage," or "Major Outage" indicators.
  • Examine the Incident History: Scroll down the status page to see if an incident was recently resolved. Residual cache issues can persist for up to 30 minutes after a fix is deployed.
  • Consult Community Detectors: Official status pages can take 10 to 15 minutes to update during a sudden spike in traffic. Check third-party monitors like Downdetector or search social platforms like X (formerly Twitter) using the hashtag #ClaudeDown to see if other users are reporting identical issues in real-time.

2. Isolate the Access Interface

Anthropic runs its web application and developer API on different server infrastructures. If one is down, the other might still be operational.

  • Test the API Console: If the primary web app (claude.ai) fails to load or returns errors, navigate to console.anthropic.com. If you have API credits, try running a quick test prompt inside the Workbench.
  • Switch Platforms: If you are using the desktop web browser, attempt to access Claude via the official iOS or Android mobile application using cellular data. If the mobile app works, the issue is isolated to your local network or browser configuration.
  • Check Third-Party Integrations: If you access Claude via Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI, check their respective cloud status dashboards. Cloud provider integrations often remain online even when the primary Claude web interface is experiencing downtime.

3. Flush Local DNS and Bypass Routing Cache

If the official status page indicates all systems are operational but you still cannot reach Claude, your local DNS cache may be routing traffic to an outdated or offline server node.

  • Flush DNS on Windows:
  • Press the Windows Key, type cmd, and select Run as administrator.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
  • Restart your web browser and attempt to load Claude again.
  • Flush DNS on macOS:
  • Open the Terminal application.
  • Type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and press Enter.
  • Enter your system password when prompted and try reloading the page.
  • Change Your DNS Servers: If your ISP's DNS is failing to resolve Claude's addresses, temporarily switch your device's DNS settings to a public recursive resolver, such as Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1).

4. Clear Site Data and Session Storage

Corrupted cookies or expired local session tokens can mimic a complete service outage by locking you into a continuous error loop.

  1. In Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, click the tune icon (two sliders) or the padlock icon located to the left of the URL bar on claude.ai.
  2. Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
  3. Click Manage on-device site data and delete all stored entries for anthropic.com and claude.ai.
  4. Close the tab, open a new Incognito or Private window, and attempt to log back in.

When to escalate

If the Anthropic status page displays a green "All Systems Operational" banner, but you have confirmed via mobile data, alternative devices, and DNS flushes that you still cannot access Claude, the problem may be an unannounced regional routing issue. File a detailed support ticket through the help widget on the Anthropic Support site (support.anthropic.com), providing your geographic location, your ISP name, and any specific error codes displayed on your screen.
