Is Claude Down? How to Check and Fix Status Issues
Updated 9/3/2026
When Claude stops responding, fails to load, or throws generic connection errors, it is difficult to tell if the service is experiencing a widespread outage or if the block is on your end. Because Anthropic runs its consumer web application, console, and developer API on overlapping infrastructure, a problem on their side can manifest as anything from a stuck loading spinner to a network timeout.
Follow these steps to systematically isolate the issue and determine if Claude is down globally or if you can resolve the issue locally.
Step 1: Check the official Anthropic status page
Before changing any local settings, verify if Anthropic has acknowledged an active outage. Anthropic publishes real-time status updates for its systems.
- Open a browser window and navigate to status.anthropic.com.
- Look at the status bar at the top of the page. It should read "All Systems Operational" if there are no ongoing issues.
- Examine the individual components listed below the header:
- Claude.ai: This represents the consumer web application.
- API: This represents the developer endpoint used by third-party integrations.
- Console: This represents the developer dashboard where API keys and billing are managed.
- Scroll down to the "Past Incidents" section to see if a recent outage was resolved, which might still be causing cached errors on your device.
Step 2: Verify crowd-sourced outage indicators
Sometimes, official status pages lag behind real-time outages by 10 to 20 minutes while engineering teams confirm the incident. To get instant confirmation, check crowd-sourced platforms.
- Visit a site like Downdetector and search for "Anthropic" or "Claude".
- Look for a sudden spike in reported outages within the last 15 minutes. A massive vertical line on the graph indicates a global or regional hosting issue.
- Check social platforms like X (formerly Twitter) using search terms such as "Claude down" or "Anthropic down" and sort by "Latest". If dozens of users are posting about the same issue within the last few minutes, the problem is on Anthropic's servers.
Step 3: Bypass localized DNS and network routing blocks
If the status page is green and no one else is reporting issues, the block is likely localized to your network route or ISP.
- Flush your DNS cache: This forces your operating system to fetch the latest IP addresses for Claude's domains.
- On Windows: Open Command Prompt as administrator and run ipconfig /flushdns.
- On macOS: Open Terminal and run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
- Change your DNS servers: Sometimes local ISP DNS servers fail to resolve Anthropic’s Cloudflare routing. Switch your network adapter’s DNS settings to a public DNS provider:
- Primary: 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare)
- Secondary: 8.8.8.8 (Google)
- Test a different connection: Turn off Wi-Fi on your mobile device and attempt to access Claude using cellular data. If it loads, your local network or router firewall is blocking the traffic.
Step 4: Clear browser application data and service workers
Claude.ai relies heavily on service workers and local storage to manage chat history and UI states. A corrupted local cache can prevent the page from reaching the servers even if the servers are fully functional.
- In your browser (e.g., Google Chrome), navigate to claude.ai.
- Click the padlock icon in the address bar and select Site settings.
- Click Clear data to wipe cookies, local storage, and cached databases for the site.
- To clear registered service workers, open Chrome Developer Tools (F12), go to the Application tab, click Service Workers in the left sidebar, and click Unregister on any worker tied to Anthropic.
- Reload the page and log back in.
Step 5: Test alternative access channels
If the web interface is unresponsive, another access channel may still be online.
- Try the API Workbench: If you have a developer account, log into console.anthropic.com and run a test query in the Workbench. The API often remains functional even when the main web UI is overloaded.
- Try the mobile application: Open the official Claude app on iOS or Android. Mobile apps sometimes route traffic through different API gateways that may be unaffected by a web-specific gateway failure.
When to escalate
If the official status page confirms an active outage, there is no need to escalate; Anthropic's engineering team is already working on a fix. However, if all status indicators are green, your local network is functional, other devices on different networks also cannot connect to Claude, and you have cleared your browser cache, contact Anthropic Support. You can open a ticket through the help widget at support.anthropic.com or by clicking the feedback button inside the developer console.
