How to Update Your Claude Pro Credit Card

Updated 8/17/2026

To prevent your Claude Pro subscription from being suspended or marked as past due, you must keep your payment information up to date. Anthropic processes all subscription billing through Stripe, a secure third-party payment processor.

If your credit card is expiring, if you need to switch payment methods, or if your last transaction failed, you must update your payment details directly in the billing settings. Follow these steps to access the Stripe billing portal and troubleshoot common update errors.

1. Access the Billing Portal on Claude.ai

You can only update your billing information through the web interface of Claude.ai. This cannot be configured via mobile apps or external integrations.

  1. Log into your account at claude.ai.
  2. Click on your profile icon or initials in the bottom-left corner of the interface.
  3. Select Settings from the popup menu.
  4. In the settings panel, select the Billing tab.
  5. Click on the button labeled Manage Subscription or Update Payment Method. This will securely redirect you to the Anthropic Stripe customer portal.

2. Add Your New Payment Method

Once redirected to the Stripe customer portal, you can safely modify your card details.

  1. Under the "Payment Method" section, click + Add payment method.
  2. Enter your new credit or debit card number, expiration date, and CVV code.
  3. Ensure the billing address matches the address registered with your bank exactly. Zip/postal code mismatches are the primary cause of update failures.
  4. Check the box to make this card your primary/default payment method.
  5. Click Add or Save.
  6. Delete your old, expired payment method by clicking the three dots next to it and selecting Remove.

3. Troubleshooting Card Update Failures

If the Stripe portal rejects your card or displays an error, troubleshoot with these checks:

  1. Verify 3D Secure / PSD2 Authentication: Many European and international banks require Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to link a card. Watch for a prompt from your banking app to authorize the $0.00 or $1.00 authorization charge Stripe uses to verify card validity.
  2. Check Card Restrictions: Stripe blocks most prepaid cards, virtual cards, and certain debit cards that do not support recurring international billing. Ensure you are using a standard Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover credit card.
  3. Clear Browser Cache or Try Incognito: Sometimes old session cookies block Stripe's verification scripts. Open an incognito window, log back into Claude.ai, and try the billing portal link again.

4. Retrying a Past-Due Invoice

If your subscription was suspended because of a failed payment, updating your card will not always trigger an immediate retry automatically.

  1. After adding your valid card as the default payment method, locate the outstanding unpaid invoice in the Stripe portal (under Billing History).
  2. If available, click Pay Now next to the invoice.
  3. If there is no manual pay button, Stripe will automatically re-attempt the charge within 24 hours of a new card being added. Once the payment clears, your access to Claude Pro will restore instantly.

When to escalate

If the Stripe portal displays a blank screen, throws a "500 Internal Server Error" when you attempt to save, or charges your card but fails to reactivate your Claude Pro status, do not attempt to subscribe multiple times. Contact Anthropic Support via support.anthropic.com. Provide the email address associated with your account and the last four digits of the card you are attempting to register.
